Slow Rise of the Little Horn - a little sideshow example

she had built up such strong alliances with both King Philip II as well as Pope Innocent III that Erard never gained any official legal support for his claims. From the start of the conflict, Pope Innocent III began excommunicating rebel barons, negatively affecting their efforts." wikipedia

Blanche of Navarre had married the son of the Duke of the county of Champagne in France. Her husband, Theobald III, died while preparing to leave for the 4th crusade. She was pregnant with his son, who would become Theobald IV.
Meanwhile, Philippa of Champagne had married a man who was the cousin of the King of Jerusalem. He encouraged her to wrestle control from Blanche.
So the question is--WHY did the "Church" take sides in an internal power struggle for earthly power & wealth to the point of excommunicating people? You really think either side was morally superior to the other?
Just a little example from the pages of history of the Little Horn meddling in politics.

P.S.-BTW, what became of Blanche? Well, her side went on to triumph. She died in 1229 of natural causes. And what became of Philippa who had grown up in the Holy Land? She died on 12/20/1250 (age 53).
