Danger of MTD [Moralistic Therapeutic Deism]

For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.
Romans 3:23

"Millions of Americans today describe themselves as spiritual but not religious.
When sociologists Christian Smith and Melinda Denton investigated this shift, they found that it wasn't necessarily a total loss of faith, but rather the emergence of a new set of beliefs.
The religiously unaffiliated haven't simply stopped believing.
They have silently adopted an unnamed religion that uses the vocabulary of Christianity while discarding its historical core.
It provides the comforting illusion of spirituality while effectively insulating the individual from any relationship that might require real sacrifice.
Central to MTD is the belief that the ultimate goal of a human life is simply to be happy and that God exists primarily to ensure that happiness. In contrast, historical Christianity teaches that free will was given to us so we could choose to love God and our neighbor.
This focus on personal comfort leads to the second major tenant
of
MTD, the claim that nice people go to heaven.
But the Biblical view of the human condition is far more complex.
It describes every person over the age of reason as a sinner who has in some way rebelled against God. From this perspective, niceness is no substitute for the true repentance and redemption found in Christ.
--By teaching that humans are good enough as long as they are pleasant, MTD leaves people trapped in their sin.
But a purely therapeutic faith cannot sustain a person through suffering. Eventually, that ledge collapses, leading to outright atheism."
