Statue of Guanyin (Bhuddist) & Mary (Catholic) blended together in Macao |
This blending of Catholicism & Buddhism in Macao, over just 4 centuries of contact, is an example of how paganism entered Christianity in the first place. It didn't take long during the days of the early "church fathers" for such paganistic practices as Sunday sacredness, immortality of the soul, certain holidays rooted in paganism, to creep in. The first Catholic diocese in Macao, which was Portuguese, was established in 1575 by Pope Gregory XIII.
Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath
righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?
And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth
with an infidel? And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the
Lord Almighty.
2 Corinthians 6:14,15,17,18
