Costumed performers that are sometimes human, sometimes animal, sometimes entirely otherworldly wander from house to house, dancing, singing, playing instruments, cracking whips, and offering shots of alcoholic drinks.

Their mission is simple but profound: to sweep away misfortune,

summon laughter, and ensure abundance in the year ahead.
This lively tradition is known as Malanka, an ancient pre-Christian ritual marking the eve of the Old New Year under the old Julian calendar. Once observed from Jan. 13–14, Malanka now begins on Dec. 31 following Ukraine's recent calendar reforms, which aligned religious and folk holidays with the new Julian calendar.

"If we speak about its ritual meaning, Malanka is a way to prevent evil in the coming year. According to tradition, figures representing death, devils, or evil spirits enter a house during Malanka, they will not return again (for the rest of the year)," Tsiia Sviderska, a popularizer of folk traditions in Chernivtsi Oblast, told the Kyiv Independent.

"There is an element of trickery and deception of evil in this. That is why Malanka must be loud — noise, music, and shouting perform a protective function, driving away everything impure."

"Two Ukrainian conscientious objectors who refused the country’s mandatory mobilization during the war with Russia have been sentenced to three-year jail terms, according to a report in the Eurasia Review. Serhy Stadnitsky, a Protestant, and the other man, an unnamed Jehovah’s Witness, have appealed their convictions on religious grounds.

If convicted, the two would join Seventh-day Adventist conscientious objector Dmytro Zelinsky who is serving a three-year sentence while waiting for his appeal to be heard by the Ukrainian Supreme Court on June 13.

The Ukrainian constitution and the United Nations Human Rights Committee call for non-military alternatives for those who object to military service on religious bases, but Ukraine’s Defense Ministry has argued that during wartime, the limited alternative services provided during peacetime do not exist.

Baptist conscientious objectors Ernest Pavlenko and Ilya Nikolenko were forcibly taken to a military unit in Zhytomyr Region. “Appropriate measures will be taken against them,” an official of the regional department of the Military Law-Enforcement Service told Forum 18. “Whether they will face criminal prosecution depends on how they behave.” Asked why they cannot be released and allowed to do an alternative civilian service as they have requested, the official responded: “Because there’s a war”.

On the morning of 30 April, Forum 18 asked Viktor Yelensky, head of the State Service for Ethnic Policy and Freedom of Conscience:

newspaper, reportedly published on the Royal Navy’s internal intranet has told staff: “Introducing yourself with your pronouns at the start of meetings and interactions is a good way to be inclusive.”

It goes on to state: “Some people do not associate with gender binary and may use different pronouns like they/them hers or neo-pronouns like ze/hir/hirs. You should use the pronoun that a person shares with you.”

The Navy’s guide on gender also featured a “trans umbrella” to illustrate the different forms of gender expression, including “pangender”, “gender neutral”, and “two-spirit”, a phrase that has been used to describe the gender of some Native Americans.

Former First Sea Lord of the British Royal Navy, Admiral Lord West said of the guidance: “I am surprised that the Navy wishes to try and divide ship’s companies by focusing on people’s gender rather than seeing them as all of one company.

“This initiative seems to me confusing and doesn’t help the cohesion and fighting ability of the navy I love.”

In addition to promulgating transgenderism, the Royal Navy told officers that sailors should be educated about the leftist ideological concepts of “white privilege” and “intersectionality", stating that “different societal aspects (race, class, gender etc) of a person’s identity combine to create a unique experience of disadvantage or discrimination”.

Navy personnel were also told that “if you are ‘white’, whatever situation you are in, it is almost always the case that the outcome has not been affected by your skin colour”.

However, despite such claims, the British armed forces have indeed discriminated against native white British people, with the Royal Air Force (RAF) previously admitting to having rejected “useless white male pilots” in an attempt to increase diversity in its ranks. While the RAF has apologized for such discrimination, there have yet to be any repercussions against the top brass that implemented racially and sexually biased practices.

An unidentified Ukrainian man shared a video in which he claims to have discovered a human bone with meat in a burnt tank in the Gostomel area – a bone which allegedly belonged to a deceased Russian soldier.

In the chilling footage, the “blogger” proceeds to “cook” what he claims is the human meat of the Russian soldier, only to taste it afterward.

He then notes it was always his dream to try the meat of a Russian.

Aside from YouTube, where the video was quickly deleted by the platform for breaching community guidelines, the man shared the footage on his Instagram page, attaching a threatening caption.
