"A new study reveals hormonal and biochemical factors that affect alcohol dependence (also known as Alcohol Use Disorder), suggesting that men and women with alcohol problems may benefit from different treatments.

They found that at the beginning of the trial men with Alcohol Use

Disorder, symptoms of depression, and higher craving for alcohol, also had lower levels of the hormones testosterone, estrone, estradiol, as well as the protein sex hormone binding globulin. No such associations were found in women with AUD.

Professor Karpyak said, "We found that there were different associations in men and women. For example, women who had higher levels of testosterone, sex hormone binding globulin, and albumin were also more likely to relapse during the first three months of treatment compared to women with lower levels of those biochemical markers." No such relationships were found in men.

"These hormones and proteins are known to have an influence on behavior, and indeed we see an association between different levels of these compounds and different behavioral aspects of alcohol use disorder, although we can't for sure say that one directly causes another. What it does mean is that if you are treating a man and a woman for alcoholism, you are dealing with different biochemical and psychological starting points. This implies that what works for a man may not work for a woman, and vice versa."

"Andy Stanley’s North Point Community Church continues to be a safe haven for LGBTQ-affirming pastors and leaders to work directly against the cause of Christ and the gospel to gay people, and this is no more clear than the recent news that Renovus is sponsoring ‘brunch’ at an upcoming Pride parade.

Renovus Network is a pro-LGBTQ+ advocacy group whose mission is to “Connect LGBTQ+ individuals to reclaim and develop their relationship with Jesus” and envision “a world where no one has to choose between their faith and sexual orientation or gender identity.” They believe that homosexuality is not a sin and instead is something to be celebrated and integrated fully into the church. One of Renovus’ board members is Debbie Causey, a gay-affirming North Point Community Church pastor and the Director of Care Network.
Renovus was co-founded by Gregory Cook, a leader with the North Point Community Church production team who claims Andy Stanley affirmed him in his homosexuality, and Brian Nietzel, who ‘married’ his husband a few years back and had his same-sex wedding celebration at Harman-Waldrop’s home, where members and leaders of North Point attended. He was one of two gay-married men who spoke at North Point’s recent Embracing the Journey conference.
So, what is Renovus up to? They are hosting a “Pride brunch” in October for Atlanta Pride."

Creation Moment 9/29/2024 - From "cells to shells" the Tiling of Creation

"Mathematicians have long enjoyed the study of shapes. Using sharp edges and plenty of points, they’ve dedicated centuries to seeing just how these shapes fit together for infinite tiling ability. But the equations used in mathematical shaping, with their hard lines and sharp points, don’t generally lead to a lot of crossover with nature.

A team of researchers from Budapest University of Technology recently announced that they have uncovered a new natural class of shape that tiles with curved edges. They uploaded their findings to the preprint server arXiv. Dubbed both “soft cells” and “z-cells,” these shapes lack the telltale corners of theoretical math, but still fit together in both two dimensions and three dimensions.

“A central problem of geometry is the tiling of space with simple structures,” the authors wrote. “The classical solutions, such as triangles, squares, and hexagons in the plane and cubes and other polyhedral in three-dimensional space are built with sharp corners and flat faces. However, many tilings in nature are characterized by shapes with curved edges, non-flat faces, and few, if any, sharp corners. An important question is then to relate prototypical sharp tilings to softer natural shapes.”

The team believes that they’ve solved the problem of dimensions with this new “infinite class of polyhedral tilings” that can smoothly deform into soft tiles and construct soft versions of cells generally associated with point lattices in both two and three dimensions.

“These shapes emerge in art, but also in biology,” study lead Gabor Domokos, told the New Scientist. “If you look at sections of muscle tissue, you’ll see the cells having just two sharp corners, which is one less than the triangle—it is a very special kind of tiling.”

“Remarkably, these ideal soft shapes, born out of geometry, are found abundantly in nature, from cells to shells,” the team wrote.

In two dimensions, these soft shell shapes are pretty easy to describe

—according to the paper, they are “cells with curved boundaries which have only two corners.” In the three-dimensional space, things get a little more complicated, but the goal is the same: let things be bendy and minimize the amount of “corners” present. In 3D, a soft cell shape can have no corners at all.
“We found that architects have found these kinds of shapes intuitively when they wanted to avoid corners,” Domokos said.

A central part of the paper shows how seashells emerge as a natural example of the shape. Known to form from multiple chambers, shell growth appears to follow a regulated pattern. Using a CT scanner, the team found that when they measured the shells in three dimensions, they couldn’t find corners, even though a two-dimensional view of the shell looked different. That led the team to believe that a seashell offers the prime example of the soft cell shape. 

It also shows how nature is far beyond our current understanding of geometry."

"The Vatican has given the go-ahead for Catholics to continue visiting a southern Bosnian village where children reported seeing visions of the Virgin Mary.

The Vatican offered its approval for devotion in one of the most

contested aspects of Roman Catholic practice in recent years. The village of Međugorje was put on the map in 1981, after six children and teenagers claimed to have seen an apparition of the Virgin Mary..... new Vatican criteria that was put in place this year, ruled that the "spiritual fruits" stemming from the Međugorje experience more than justified allowing the people to organize pilgrimages there and permitting public acts of devotion.

Since the first reports of apparitions, Catholics have flocked to Međugorje to visit the place which has been held in high religious regard. Until now, the Vatican has not officially backed the pilgrimages to the area, and past diocesan bishops have voiced doubts about the validity of the claims. 

Some of the original witnesses from 1981, have claimed the visions have occurred regularly since then, even daily, and that Mary sends them messages."

Creation Moment 9/28/2024 - "Redshift" Blues for Big Bangers

"William G. Tifft in 1973: “quantized redshifts.” The big bang theory

was becoming stronger at the time. Robert Wilson and Arno Penzias had detected the cosmic background radiation, the alleged “echo” of the big bang, in 1964. Alternative cosmologies were waning in popularity and the big bang was king. It was rapidly becoming the “standard model” for the origin of the universe. But quantized redshifts threw a monkey wrench into the big bang. If true, they suggested that redshifts were not a function of distance or age.

Tifft claimed to have detected 

--a periodicity to redshift values, 

--rather than a continuum. 

*The big bang predicted a continuum of redshifts due to the expansion of the universe. 

Q: How could they be periodic, like beads on a string? 

It made no sense. A few other astronomers followed up with additional estimates of periodic redshift values, either linear or logarithmic. 

Because Tifft was hanging out with mavericks like Fred Hoyle, J.V. Narlikar, Halton Arp and Geoffrey Burbidge, most cosmologists tended to dismiss the announcement as a mistake based on some flaw in measurements or an anomaly that would be explained later.

This year, more discussion appeared among cosmologists about quantized redshifts, and Phys.org picked up the buzz.

Quantized redshift and challenges to Big Bang hypothesis (23 Sept 2024, Phys.org). This article emerged as a dialog on Science X Network, a location on Phys.org’s parent company “where researchers can report findings from their published research articles.” The published article in this instance was posted August 12 on Cornell’s arXiv preprint server:

Quantized Redshift and its significance for recent observations (12 Aug 2024, arXiv). This preprint by Arindam Mal, Sarbani Palit, Christopher C. Fulton, Sisir Roy was the basis for the Phys.org article by two of the authors, Mal and Roy. The abstract of the paper claims new values of periodicity for quantized redshifts:

"We have observed a fundamental periodicity of 0.051 with a confidence interval of 95% in linear scale with the site-available Sloan Digital Sky Survey data release 7 (SDSS DR7) quasar-galaxy pair data set. We have independently generated quasar-galaxy pair data sets from both 2dF and SDSS and found fundamental periodicities of 0.077 and 0.089 in log scale with a confidence interval of 95%."

Astronomers subscribing to alternative cosmologists claim that

redshifts of quasars (the most luminous objects at great distances) are not functions of expansion of the universe, but rather age effects of quasars being ejected from galactic centers.

The Phys.org article says that observations from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) have come into the discussion:

"Recent observations by JWST and other telescopes violate the standard cosmology fundamental principle that the universe is on average homogeneous and isotropic. Also violated are standard model predictions about high redshift, high luminosity, metallicity and carbon evolution in the early universe, including the presence of large filament objects, galaxies like the Milky Way and unexpected morphology of objects at both high and low redshift."

Some specific instances are mentioned in the article:

"The recently observed GNz7q is a dusty starburst galaxy from which a luminous quasar is apparently emerging, a situation that is not consistent with the presence of a still young central black hole in a less massive phase at high redshift.

GN-z11 is estimated to be only 70 million years old but appears to be a moderately massive, metal-free, second-generation galaxy. JWST has observed a supermassive black hole at 200 million years after the Big Bang, which raises the question as to how this SMBH formed so quickly just after the birth of the universe. Many other observations raise fundamental questions about the formation and evolution of both galaxies and quasars."

Cosmology in Crisis

Apart from the question of quantized redshifts, recent articles have worried about other anomalies threatening the standard big bang model.

Cosmology is at a tipping point – we may be on the verge of discovering new physics (12 Sept 2024, The Conversation). Andreea Font of Liverpool John Moore University uses the “tipping point” motif to suggest that things could go in opposite directions. Nevertheless, she remains “excited” at the possibility of new physics emerging from the debates.

"For the past few years, a series of controversies have rocked the well-established field of cosmology. In a nutshell, the predictions of the standard model of the universe appear to be at odds with some recent observations."

Study: Early dark energy could resolve cosmology’s two biggest puzzles (12 Sept 2024, MIT News). Jennifer Chu’s use of the phrase “two biggest puzzles” indicates that some major anomalies are not yet resolved. “In the universe’s first billion years, this brief and mysterious force could have produced more bright galaxies than theory predicts.” 

If proposed “early dark energy” could resolve them, that implies it

does not at this time. Nobody knows what dark energy is anyway. Sounds like adding a fudge factor to keep a theory from collapsing. MIT astronomers were sent into scramble mode when JWST kept finding big, bright galaxies too early for comfort. Solution: turn up the perhapsimaybecouldness knob.

"The bright galaxies that JWST saw would be like seeing a clustering of lights around big cities, whereas theory predicts something like the light around more rural settings like Yellowstone National Park,” Shen says. “And we don’t expect that clustering of light so early on.

For physicists, the observations imply that there is either something fundamentally wrong with the physics underlying the models or a missing ingredient in the early universe that scientists have not accounted for. The MIT team explored the possibility of the latter, and whether the missing ingredient might be early dark energy."

Q: So what is early dark energy but a fudge factor? 

A: It’s “a sort of antigravitational force that is turned on only at very early times.” Sounds like the Guth Goof, concocting inflation out of whole cloth to solve one problem by creating others.

Q: After cosmic dark ages, what burned away ubiquitous clouds of gas? 

A: NASA telescope finds surprises (10 Sept 2024, Science Magazine). One must read claims about the big bang with scrutiny. This article, while treating the big bang like established fact, exchanges one problem for its opposite problem.

"During the first billion years after the Big Bang, as the first stars and galaxies switched on and filled the darkness with new light, they also caused another transformation: ionizing the neutral hydrogen gas filling the universe. Until recently, astronomers struggled to explain how it could happen. Ionizing hydrogen requires high-energy ultraviolet (UV) light, and the sparse, fledgling galaxies did not seem up to the task. Now, JWST, NASA’s orbiting infrared observatory, has turned that on its head. It is finding so many bright young galaxies and luminous black holes that there may be an oversupply of UV light."

Combination and summary of ATLAS dark matter searches within 2HDM+a framework (12 Sept 2024, Science China Press via Phys.org). They keep looking but just cannot find the stuff.

"Despite extensive astronomical observations confirming the existence of dark matter, we have limited knowledge about the properties of dark matter particles. From a microscopic perspective, the Standard Model of particle physics, established in the mid-20th century, has been hugely successful and confirmed by numerous experiments.

However, the Standard Model cannot explain the existence of dark matter in the universe, indicating the need for new physics beyond the Standard Model to account for dark matter candidate particles, and the urgent need to find experimental evidence of these candidates."

The crisis in big bang cosmology should be a reminder to Bible believers to trust the Word of God and not build their models on the shifting sands of materialist ideas. Details are hard to resolve sometimes, but we have the big picture from the Eyewitness: “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. Genesis 1:1.”

"Baleen whales are among the biggest creatures on Earth – science is revealing new secrets about their size (11 Sept 2024, The Conversation).

“And God created great sea creatures,” Genesis 1:21 has stated for over three millennia, but Darwinians scoff at such notions believed by “people of faith.” 

In this piece on the Darwine-drunk website The Conversation, Sam McKee dispenses with faith. He has Darwinian evolution to give him understanding!

“Baleen whales evolved bristly baleen plates instead of teeth, which filter or trap krill, plankton and small fish inside their mouths,” he says. But is it logical to beg the question? Has his study of rorquals, which includes baleen whales, given him understanding?

"Rorquals swim large distances which has made uncovering their evolution difficult for many reasons, including that it’s harder to identify individual populations. Furthermore, the scale of commercial hunting in the past two centuries almost destroyed many rorqual populations."

The promised understanding never comes. He wonders why large animals like whales don’t get cancer, having many more cells than we do. Maybe it’s because “molecular mechanisms of rorquals seem to give them cancer resistance.” 

But that could be by design, not evolution. Where is the promised science (not faith) that can explain whales’ immunity from cancer and huge size? Comparing genes of rorquals of different sizes doesn’t mean that they evolved from each other in a Darwinian way. There is no clear evolutionary path. It’s all fluff.

"Another 2023 genetic study helped us understand how hybridisation muddled the picture of their genomic makeup, as there has been much interbreeding between rorqual species. But we now know that rorquals took a different ecological and evolutionary niche to other baleen whales, as well as toothed whales, to become impressive hunters."

Why is it an “evolutionary niche” and not just a niche? 

Is his use of that adjective a subconscious tribute to Darwin? Hybridization is not evolution. It merely shuffles existing genetic information. It doesn’t create new genetic information as Darwinism requires." CEH

"The dating and hookup app Bumble, which enables women to facilitate random sexual encounters with strangers, is financing free screenings around the country of Hillary Clinton’s pro-abortion

documentary, with the screenings set to occur ahead of November’s presidential election.
Bumble is financing the rollout of Zurawski v Texas, which will open in Austin on September 24 before a series of free screenings at Alamo Drafthouse theaters around the country on September 25, according to a report from The Hollywood Reporter.
The movie is reportedly still looking for a traditional theatrical distributor or streamer, which it would need to launch an awards season campaign.
