"The voices of the people gathered at Broad Street United Methodist Church resounded from its wooden peaks as they each raised a hand on Saturday and blessed the Rev. David Meredith and Jim Schlachter on their wedding day.
"Now that Jim and David have extended their 28-year commitment to one another with solemn vows, we announce to one another, the United Methodist Church, the state of Ohio and the world entire that they are married," the crowd said.
With those words, Meredith joined the ranks of United Methodist ministers who have defied the denomination's rules and risk being defrocked by coming out as gay or presiding over same-sex weddings. And it was no coincidence that the ceremony was held just three days before the United Methodist Church kicks off its general Conference in Portland, Oregon, where delegates will debate changing those rules."
