SDA Issues - E.G.W. on the Holy Spirit

And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
Ephesians 4:30

"Often it is said that the quotes in the book Evangelism are a fake. This book was first published several years after Ellen White’s death, so it is said that these quotations were added without her approval. Look at the first one:
“The Comforter that Christ promised to send after He ascended to heaven, is the Spirit in all the fullness of the Godhead, making manifest the power of divine grace to all who receive and believe in Christ as a personal Saviour. There are three living persons of the heavenly trio; in the name of these three great powers—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit—those who receive Christ by living faith are baptized, and these powers will co-operate with the obedient subjects of heaven in their efforts to live the new life in Christ.—Special Testimonies, Series B, No. 7, pp. 62, 63. (1905)” Evangelism, 615.

This quote was first printed in 1905 in Special Testimonies, Series B, No. 7, page 63. In this edition, you read exactly the same words as in the book Evangelism. If you do a research on that in the original files, you find the same words.

When Ellen White was in Australia, she helped to found Avondale School. In 1899, she addressed the students of the school: “We need to realize that the Holy Spirit, who is as much a person as God is a person, is walking through these grounds.—Manuscript 66, 1899. (From a talk to the students at the Avondale School.)” Evangelism, 616.

In the same document, you find another quotation which has been published in Evangelism, 616. “The Holy Spirit is a person, for He beareth witness with our spirits that we are the children of God.” These words may be read in Mrs. White’s own handwriting....
You cannot put it more clearly. The Holy Spirit is as much a person as is God the Father a person."

SDA History: E.G.W. in Peru, Indiana

"Peru, Ind., September 14, 1876.--The camp-meeting in this place has been one of the best we have attended this season.
Sabbath forenoon my husband spoke with freedom upon the subject of faith. Luke 12:1.

In the afternoon I spoke to the people upon the barren fig-tree.

It stood forth among the leafless trees with its apparently flourishing branches far in advance of all other trees. Christ sought for fruit upon this tree from the topmost bough to the lowest branches, but finding nothing but leaves, he passed an irrevocable sentence of doom upon it.

Christ invests the fig-tree with moral qualities, and makes it the expositor of divine truth that he may teach a lesson to his disciples, and not only to them but to all who should believe on the Word.
Many, like the portentous fig-tree,
make high profession of godliness,
but bear no fruit to the glory of God.
They have not responded to the sacred influences which God has given them.
--Opportunities have been unimproved,
--blessings have been unappreciated,
--warnings and reproofs have been rejected.
The fostering love and care of the Redeemer has been unrequited, and like the barren fig-tree they stand forth fruitless, having nothing but leaves.

Many testimonies of confession were borne, well wet down with tears.
A number stated that this was the first Sabbath they had kept.
Others said they were making a start to serve God and had come forward for the first time.
Very deep feeling pervaded the meeting.

My husband led in prayer,
and his faith fastened upon the throne of God.
Heaven seemed to be very near.
Praying and weeping was mingled, and earnest, agonizing prayer went forth from unfeigned lips.

The solemn power of God rested upon the company bowed in humiliation before him. I thought of the day of Pentecost, when the power of God came upon the worshipers like a mighty, rushing wind. I have not witnessed such an exhibition of the manifest power of God for years.
There was no wild fanaticism, but a sweet, soft, subduing spirit.

The gathering was large for the place, and the audience seemed
charmed by the new and startling facts of truth brought before them. Men of repute from Peru who listened to the two discourses stated that an overwhelming array of argument had been presented in favor of the Sabbath which had knocked the last prop for the sacred observance of Sunday from beneath them.

At half-past two I spoke upon the subject of Temperance, taking for my text Revelation 3:21: "To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne."...Tobacco and liquor lie at the foundation of a large share of the crime and violence that is polluting our world. I pointed them to Jesus, their Redeemer, who commenced the work of redemption where the ruin began on the
part of appetite.

Bro. Weber, a man of good repute in the city of Rochester, who attended our camp-meeting in Kokomo two years since, related his interesting experience, dating from that meeting. He stated that he had used tobacco for forty years, commencing its use when a child. His father and mother used it, and he thought it would cost him his life to give it up. But when I was speaking upon the evils of the indulgence of appetite for tobacco, strong convictions of the sinfulness of this indulgence forced themselves upon him, and he threw his tobacco from him with the determination never to taste or handle it again."

"Testimony of Jesus"

Who bare record of the word of God, and of the testimony of Jesus Christ, and of all things that he saw. Revelation 1:2

The Testimony of Jesus:
Not Words about Christ
Rather Words from Christ

Does the Testimony have to be Canonical? John the Baptist wasn't Canonical...yet...
For I say unto you, Among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist:....But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves,...
Luke 7:28,30

"Little heed is given to the Bible,
and the Lord has given a lesser light
to lead men and women to the greater light."

1)- And the dragon was wroth with the woman,
and went to make war with
--the remnant of her seed,
--which keep the commandments of God,

worship God:

Book Review: Stories From Sunnyside

(short) Book Review: A book that may be of some interest....
(Review by AR)

 Stories From Sunnyside
by Marian de Berg
354 pages Publisher: Signs Publishing (November 11, 2017)

Ellen White spent nine years in Australia;...
In Stories From Sunnyside Marian de Berg, an administrative assistant at the Ellen G. White/Seventh-day Adventist Research Centre in Cooranbong, Australia, tells a story unfamiliar to all but the most well-informed Adventist historians. In nearly 50 short, readable chapters de Berg tells how Ellen White came to Australia, describes the places she lived, and introduces us to the family members and friends who surrounded Ellen White during her sojourn “down under.”
A remarkable feature of the book is not only the narrative provided, most in Ellen White’s own words, but also the photographs that accompany the volume, most of which will be unfamiliar to Adventists in North America. Who knew, for example, that Ellen White kept a dog named Tiglath Pileser, named after a ruthless ancient Assyrian king and described as “a terror to evildoers” (the dog, that is). A photo of the dog next to his house is one of the many photographs that illustrate the book.

His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.

IN the NEWS - S.O.P. Predicted?

"The trades unions will be one of the agencies that will bring upon this earth a time of trouble such as has not been since the world began."
Maranatha p.183 E.G.W.

"In all our great cities there will be a binding up in bundles by the confederacies and unions formed.
"Poland’s Sejm — its equivalent to the U.S. House of Representatives — voted last week to phase out shopping on
Sundays in order to provide workers nationwide with a day of rest.

According to the Catholic Herald, the idea was initially proposed by trade unions and later supported by the ruling Law and Justice Party. The bill was passed by a vote of 254 to 156.
The bill will next go to Poland’s Senate and then to President Andzrej Duda. If approved, Sunday shopping will be restricted to the first and last Sunday of each month in 2018, the last Sunday of each month in 2019 and then a total ban in 2020 and beyond." TheBlaze

SDA History: E.G.W. & the Rocking Chair

"A few years ago I listened to an audio file of a sermon by M.L. Andreasen, recorded in late 50s I think, in which he told a story that Ellen White had shared with him:

When she was a young girl, Methodist elders came knocking at her family’s door to make a visit out of concern for them because the Harmons had purchased a rocking chair. They explained that a rocking chair was worldly, not appropriate for Christians. They allowed the elders to remove the runners on the chair immediately. After it was changed into a proper 4-legged chair, the elders were satisfied with the success of their mission and left. Ellen White shared this story with the young Andreasen and chuckled as she told it." Barry Kimbrough

And he took ten men of the elders of the city,
and said, Sit ye down here. And they sat down.

Book Review: Glimpses Into the Life of Ellen White

(short) Book Review: A book that may be of some interest....
(Review by ABC)

Glimpses Into the Life of Ellen White
by James R. Nix
96 pages | Pacific Press Publishing Association | Copyright 2016

“Brothers and sisters, I commend unto you this book.”
Those words, spoken in 1909, as she held up the Bible, were part of the closing remarks given by Ellen White at the last General Conference session she attended. Sixty five years earlier she’d accepted the call to be the Lord’s messenger. She was seventeen
years old. She made it her lifelong ministry to uplift Scripture and to point people to Jesus.
Glimpses Into the Life of Ellen White is filled with stories that provide a fascinating look behind-the-scenes at the life and times of Ellen White. Some of the stories will make you smile; others will move you to tears; but all of them show that Ellen White was a very real person who chose to dedicate her life in service to the One she called, “My Father.”
We sometimes forget that our pioneers were all real people—God started our church using real people. Come to think about it, real people are all He still has to finish the work that needs to be complete before Jesus returns.
James R. Nix is a consummate storyteller who is at his finest when sharing stories of early Adventist believers and Mrs. White in particular. Glimpses Into the Life of Ellen White is filled with fascinating accounts that give a behind-the-scenes look at the life of Ellen White and provide a glimpse of the unseen world.

SDA News - E.G.W. Street

"The city of La Romana in southeast Dominican Republic
yesterday declared it will rename one of its streets after Ellen G. White, one of the founders of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
The announcement came during a special ceremony held at La Romana’s municipal building. In attendance were the mayor, Maritza Suero, city officials, and Seventh-day Adventist world church President Ted N. C. Wilson.

“Words are not enough to greet such high personalities of the Christian world here today to this city of La Romana which we have declared it as God’s city,” said Suero, as she welcomed top Adventist leaders from around the world, local leaders and Church members.

Formerly 7th Street, Elena G. de White Street is located in the Villa Alacrán community and connects two neighboring communities. District Councilman Wanchy Medina was credited for the idea of renaming the street.

Medina, who grew up as a Seventh-day Adventist, was inspired to recognize Ellen G. White because she was an authority who has made a significant contribution to the world in health and many different subjects, he said.  The street is one block from the 60-member La Fe de Villa Alacran Adventist Church.

G.T. Ng, secretary of the Adventist world church and chair of the White Estate Board of Trustees, said this is the first time a street has been named after Ellen G. White. “This comes on the 100th anniversary of Mrs. White death,” he noted.

“This event means so much to our members here in the Dominican Republic,” Acevedo said. “Our membership respects and appreciates greatly the ministry of Ellen G. White. Our members continue to benefit from her instruction, and this street sign will point to the gems found in her writings.”"

Ellen G. White Named Among 100 Most Significant Americans

A White scholar welcomes the decision by the Smithsonian magazine to acknowledge White’s influence on religion.

"A leading scholar on Ellen G. White welcomed a decision by Smithsonian magazine to name the cofounder of the Seventh-day Adventist Church as one of the 100 most significant Americans of all times.

The magazine places White in a group that includes the likes of Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr., and Helen Keller in its Spring 2015 issue. The individuals were chosen with the use of an algorithm that measures data taken from Wikipedia pages and Google book scans.

“It is good to see an institution of Smithsonian’s caliber giving proper acknowledgement to Ellen White,” said William Fagal, associate director of the Ellen G. White Estate, a depository of White's writings.

The Smithsonian, the main publication of the Smithsonian Institute, the world's largest museum and research complex, does not rank the 100 people. Instead, it divides them into 10 categories of 10 people each, and White appears in the category “Religious Figures.” But the magazine did give White the distinction of being the most interesting religious figure in U.S. history by, as it explained in a preface to the list, providing her with more space than the other 10 choices—a full-page article illustrated with a full-page drawing.

The non-bylined article focuses largely on the some 2,000 visions and dreams that White said she experienced from the age of 17 in 1844 until she died 70 years later. It offers a detailed description from White and eyewitnesses about the visions, and it notes that skeptics later hypothesized that the visions might have been caused by epilepsy or mercury poisoning. The article also suggests that White herself connected the visions with a serious childhood head injury that she suffered when she was struck with a stone.
White, however, only said in her lifetime that the injury caused her to seek Jesus, not that it caused the visions themselves.

“The article downplays the supernatural basis for her contribution—not surprising for a publication of this type—but we welcome its recognition of her significance to religion, not just in America, but throughout the world,” Fagal said Sunday.

The article leaves the origin of the visions up in the air.
“Whatever the cause,” the article says, “she would have as many as 2,000 seemingly divine experiences over the next few decades and they, along with her prolific writings (more than 100,000 pages by the time of her death), would help shape Seventh-day Adventism as it became an organized denomination in the 1860s.”

The article also mentions the Adventist belief that Jesus began the process of end-time judgment of people in 1844 and gives a nod to the movement’s emphasis on healthy living.
It incorrectly says the Adventist Church has “some 14 million followers.” Church membership currently stands at 18.1 million, according to figures presented at the church’s Annual Council business meeting this fall.

Seventh-day Adventists view White as a gifted writer and a special messenger appointed by God to draw the world's attention to the Bible and help prepare people for Jesus’ second coming, according to a biography on the White Estate’s website.

White also is the most translated woman author in the history of literature, writing more than 5,000 journal articles and 40 books on religion, education, nutrition, and Christian living, among other topics.

The formula used by the Smithsonian to compile its list was constructed by Steven Skiena, a professor of computer science at Stony Brook University, and Charles B. Ward, an engineer at Google. The duo came up with an algorithm that uses Wikipedia’s 840,000 pages about individuals and data from 15 million books that Google has scanned to measure people’s accomplishments and how well they are remembered for them.
Using this method, the top five figures in world history are, in order of importance: Jesus, Napoleon, Muhammad, William Shakespeare and Abraham Lincoln." AdventistReview

How we should study E.G.W.

"How should we read Ellen White in the twenty first century? Let me suggest three basic rules of interpretation.

Number one, take all that she has said about the topic into consideration before drawing a final conclusion, there hundreds of references to the Holy Spirit in the works of Ellen White and thousands of references to the person and work of Jesus Christ.

Number two, if the statement seems inconsistent with other related statements, study the context, internal and external in your effort to resolve the apparent conflict. Of course you remember that the internal context deals with what the inspired writer wrote immediately before or immediately after the difficult statement. The external context deals with such questions as to whom was the statement written? When was it written? Why was it written? What circumstances called it forth? Ellen White once said, “God wants us all to have common sense and He wants us to reason from common sense.” Circumstances alter conditions, circumstances change the relation of things, she said that in Selected Messages volume 3.

The last hermeneutical rule I am going to mentation, you have heard before, find the principle, the principle is the general, moral rule of conduct that never changes, modesty for instance is a principle, how do we apply the principle of modesty?"

Spirit of Prophecy & His End Time Church

And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ. Revelation 12:17
What is the "Testimony" of Jesus? ...for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy. Revelation 19:10
A postcanonical prophecy/prophet must
1) Totally be in harmony with the canon of scripture (Bible). To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them. Isaiah 8:20
2) Judged carefully by the community. Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge. 1 Corinthians 14:29
3) Content of the prophecy should be edifying to the community. But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort. 1 Corinthians 14:3
4) Prophecy should be done in an orderly way. For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints. 1 Corinthians 14:33
For someone to have the gift of prophecy since the close of the canon of scripture-they have the same INSPIRATION as the Biblical writers-but NOT the same AUTHORITY as the Biblical writers. For whatever they give as a message cannot add or take away from scripture. And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book. Revealation 22:19 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. Matthew 5:18 For I am the LORD, I change not; Malachi 3:6
If someone in any Church would happen to be given the gift of prophecy for their Church--- Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith;Romans 12:6 --- It would
1) Point to the Scriptures
2) Illuminate teachings already there
3) Apply principles of Scripture to the daily life
4) Reprove, warn & instruct to stay on course
5) Protect from false doctrines.

As E.G.W. tell us- "The written testimonies are not to give new light, but to impress vivdly upon the heart the truths of inspiration already given." Testimonies for the Church Vol. 5, p.665 E.G.W.  "The testimonies were not given to take the place of the Bible." Testimonies for the Church vol. 5, p.663 E.G.W. "Let the testimonies be judged by their fruits. What is the spirit of their teachings? What has been the result of their influence?" Testimonies for the Church vol. 5, p.671 E.G.W. "The cares of the world, the love of fashion, and the lack of religion have turned the attention from the light God has so graciously given, while books and periodicals containing error are traveling all over the country. Skepticism and infidelity are increasing everywhere." Testimonies forthe Church vol. 5, p.681 E.G.W. But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy: Acts 2:16-18
Ellen G. White, considered to be a mesenger to the last day church, considered her writings to be the LESSER LIGHT that POINTS toward the GREATER LIGHT of the Bible. Her writings under inspiration are to NEVER take the place of the Bible.
