"“The sanctification of the rights of individuals and their liberties today by libertarians and Tea Party conservatives is contrary to our evolved human nature as social animals. . . . The thought that it is both rational and natural for each of us to care only for ourselves, our own preservation, and our own achievements is a treacherous fabrication.”
The above quotation is taken from an article written by John Edward Terrell for the opinion section of The New York Times.
The author knows very little about the conservative movement. He is mostly describing Ayn Rand’s Objectivist Philosophy where the evolved individual is sovereign. Those that make up the majority of the Tea Party do not hold to an evolutionary moral/social theory. They believe they are created in the image of God, not that they evolved from a soup of elemental chemicals where rational thought and morality were nowhere to be found.
If evolution is true, there is neither a moral nor rational foundation from which to argue for any social or political position based on reason or morality. “Treachery” is what made us what we are given that “nature, red in tooth and claw” brought us to this point in history. Why all of a sudden has it changed for the evolutionists?
In more simple terms, the writer is regurgitating the false promises of the Marxists in the name of democracy. Communism was sold to the people in the name of the common or general good.
If you want to get a picture of what happens when the individual is absorbed by the collective,
We can’t have that. We’re all equal now – equally poor and starving with typhus spreading but being denied by the State because once the State is empowered bad things no longer happen:
The people who advocate such nonsense have no idea what happens when someone’s idea of an ideal society comes to pass. It all sounds so grand and attainable on paper and when those calling for an egalitarian society march in the streets with signs advocating “Power to the People.” The first thing they learn when the revolution is over is that they’ve lost freedom and power."
