For Emperor Constantine, Christ was viewed as the unconquered sun manifested. That is what he was
trying to do with his law of Sunday observance in 323 AD. He was trying to blend his religion of the unconquerable sun & that of the religion of Christ the Son of God.
The labarum (official standard) of Constantine was the Chi Rho rather than the cross.
