"Deep within the distant ice giants of our Solar System, familiar elements may behave in unfamiliar ways.

The deep interiors of ice giants such as Uranus and Neptune may contain a previously unknown form of matter, based on new computational research by Carnegie scientists Cong Liu and Ronald Cohen.

Data on Uranus and Neptune show that their interiors likely contain layers of unusual “hot ices.” These layers sit between the outer

hydrogen and helium atmospheres and the inner rocky cores. Scientists believe they are made up of water (H2O), methane (CH4), and ammonia (NH4), but under such extreme conditions, these materials may take on unfamiliar forms.
At very high pressures and temperatures, matter can behave in unexpected ways. This is why scientists use both experiments and theoretical models to explore what might exist inside these planets.

Their results point to the formation of a structured hexagonal lattice, where hydrogen atoms travel along spiral-like paths. This motion creates a quasi-one-dimensional superionic state.

Superionic materials fall between solids and liquids.

In these systems, one set of atoms stays locked in a crystal structure while another set moves freely through it.
“This newly predicted carbon–hydrogen phase is particularly striking because the atomic motion is not fully three-dimensional,” Cohen explained. “Instead, hydrogen moves preferentially along well-defined helical pathways embedded within an ordered carbon structure.”

The directional movement of hydrogen in this material could affect how heat and electricity flow inside planets. This, in turn, may influence how energy is distributed, how well these regions conduct electricity, and how scientists interpret the magnetic fields of ice giants.
The study also shows that even simple chemical systems can develop complex structures under extreme conditions, expanding what researchers know about matter at high pressure and temperature." SciTechDaily

Creation Moment 12/15/2025 - Assumption-Heavy & too Simplistic

Remember, much of what those of evolutionary cosmology teach and reach is usually based on Assumption-Heavy & Simplistic analysis.

"For generations, school posters have sorted the Solar System into tidy boxes: four small rocky planets near the Sun, two huge gas planets farther out, and, at the edge, a pair of “ice giants” – Uranus and Neptune – packed with water, ammonia, and methane.

Using a fresh kind of interior model, researchers from the University of Zurich argue that Uranus and Neptune could be far rockier than those posters suggest. In many valid solutions, the planets are just as compatible with rock-heavy interiors as with the classic ice-rich picture.

“Both Uranus and Neptune could be rock giants or ice giants
depending on the model assumptions,” said Ravit Helled, a professor from the University of Astrophysics and one of the researchers involved. “Current data are currently insufficient to distinguish the two, and we therefore need dedicated missions to Uranus and Neptune that can reveal their true nature.”

Standard diagrams show them with thick mantles of “planetary ices” — mostly water, plus ammonia and methane — sitting above a rocky core, all wrapped in a light atmosphere that contains hydrogen, helium and a bit of methane gas that gives them their blue color.

The catch is that no one has ever actually seen the insides of either planet. Voyager 2 flew past Uranus in 1986 and Neptune in 1989, measuring gravity and magnetic fields during quick flybys, then moved on. There has never been an orbiter to map their interiors in detail. So everything beneath the clouds comes from computer models that try to match a limited set of observations.

“The ice giant classification is oversimplified as Uranus and Neptune are still poorly understood,” said Luca Morf, Ph.D. student at the University of Zurich and lead author of the study. “Models based on physics were too assumption-heavy, while empirical models are too simplistic.” ZME

"Carolyn Porco and Fathi Namouni at the Southwest Research

Institute in Boulder, Colorado, in a letter to Nature in the May 2 issue, have re-assessed the delicate balance of forces that keeps parts of Neptune’s ring clumped into sausage-like arcs. 

Normally, any clumps would quickly spread and be erased within a year, but somehow these structures persist. First detected from earth in 1986, they are as mysterious as when Voyager 2 imaged them in 1989. Tidal resonance with Galatea, one of the inner moons, is involved somehow. 

Earlier theories invoked corotational inclination resonance (CIR), but this cannot explain the main arc. Porco proposes a corotational eccentricity resonance (CER), that works if the ring arcs have sufficient mass and Galatea has a certain eccentricity. Galatea’s orbit, however, should have been circularized (no eccentricity) within 108 years, one fiftieth the assumed age of the solar system. Perhaps the arcs’ mass causes a residual eccentricity in Galatea’s orbit. The authors point out several variables that don’t fit neatly into any model, and say perhaps CIR and CER are both needed in concert to explain all the features. Some values need to be further constrained before their latest model can be evaluated.

"This was an odd and unexpected discovery. Ring particles are subject to continuous disruption and bombardment by

micrometeorites, subatomic particles, collisions, gas drag and gravitational perturbations by nearby moons. That rings exist at all around the four gas giants is puzzling, if the solar system is 4.5 billion years old, but that some of Neptune’s should be confined to clumps and arcs was startling and totally unexpected. Planetary scientists may someday figure out how to keep them going for long time periods, but for 4.5 billion years? It would seem very difficult to explain how something so tenuous could be that persistent, because the moons like Galatea are themselves undergoing orbital changes. That’s why most planetary scientists feel that rings formed recently, and we are just lucky to have evolved at the same time too see them. Another possibility never considered is that maybe the solar system is not that old. When Cassini gets to Saturn in 2004, we can probably expect more mysteries of the rings to be unveiled."

"Ancient people knew and named six of the eight planets in our solar system. But Uranus and Neptune are much further away and need powerful telescopes to be seen properly.

Q: How could they form? 

Evolutionists say that the sun and planets formed from a collapsing

cloud of dust and gas. But there would be very little material so far away from the sun, and it would move very slowly. 

So some evolutionists say that Uranus and Neptune should not exist under their model. 

But they do exist, because God created them on Day 4 of Creation Week.

Uranus and especially Neptune give off more heat than they receive from the sun. That is why Neptune is a bit warmer despite being further from the sun. The heat also powers the strong winds on these planets. But if the planets were billions of years old, the heat source would have run out long ago."

"Astronomers may now understand why the similar planets Uranus
and Neptune have distinctive hues. Researchers constructed a single atmospheric model that matches observations of both planets.....The model reveals that excess haze on Uranus accumulates in the planet’s stagnant, sluggish atmosphere, giving it a lighter hue than Neptune.

The planets Neptune and Uranus have much in common — they have similar masses, sizes, and atmospheric compositions — yet their appearances are notably different. At visible wavelengths Neptune has a distinctly bluer color whereas Uranus is a pale shade of cyan.

New research suggests that a layer of concentrated haze that exists on both planets is thicker on Uranus than a similar layer on Neptune and ‘whitens’ Uranus’s appearance more than Neptune’s.

If there were no haze in the atmospheres of Neptune and Uranus, both would appear almost equally blue.

--The team’s model consists of three layers of aerosols at different heights.

--The key layer that affects the colors is the middle layer, which is a layer of haze particles (referred to in the paper as the Aerosol-2 layer) that is thicker on Uranus than on Neptune. 

The team suspects that, on both planets, methane ice condenses onto the particles in this layer, pulling the particles deeper into the atmosphere in a shower of methane snow." SciTechDaily
