Rathaus of Reformers: Little Horn NOT Antiochus IV Epiphanes

The Nuremberg Rathaus displays the following architecture from Reformation thought on Daniel's Prophecies....

First, A lion & king Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon
Second, a bear & king Cyrus of Persia
Third, a 4 headed leopard & Alexander the Great of Greece
Fourth, a beast with 10 horns, which a "little horn" sticks out & Caesar of Rome

So even Reformers viewed the Little Horn coming up from Rome....NOT from Greece (the leopard) hence even they knew the Little Horn
was NOT an obscure Greek king named Antiochus IV Epiphanes.

I considered the horns, and, behold,
there came up among them another little horn,

Above is a Tweet from the so-called "Adventist Forum", which is a front of Spectrum Magazine which relishes bashing Adventist Biblical doctrines from within the Church.
As one can see from the above Tweet, it degraded into leftist political thought...
The SABBATH is NOT about  breaking down perceived, so-called "economic tyranny".
{mackenzian needs to read James 4:5 The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy?}
The Sabbath is NOT a tool of Bernie Sanders & his ilk.
As for "feminists, Black liberationists, and womanists"....let Ellen White respond---

Creation Moment 9/22/2016 - Creation in Micah

"Micah.
Affinities and intertextual issues between the messages of Micah and Isaiah are numerous and have been pointed out repeatedly by various scholars.
The most often quoted passage in this context is the almost identical parallel found in Micah 4:1-3, 5 and Isaiah 2:2-5. Though the passage can be taken as an argument for a common prophetic message of the two prophets, for the purpose of this study, the focus rests on the creation imagery transmitted in an eschatological setting via the metaphor of Mount Zion. According to Old Testament cosmology, Zion lies at the center of the created world, and Micah points to the establishment of it in terms of
creation terminology (“to establish” [Micah 4:1]). Creation in Micah is focused on destruction and consequent re-creation in the context of the “day of the Lord” with its eschatological implications. The prophet builds a theological bridge between creation in the beginning and in the end around the presence of God as symbolized by the Mount Zion metaphor."

Papal Notes - Crying "Peace"

"Violence in the name of God does not represent the true nature of
religion and must be condemned by all faiths, Pope Francis said.
"We never tire of repeating that the name of God cannot be used to justify violence. Peace alone, and not war, is holy!" the pope said Sept. 20 at the closing ceremony of an interreligious peace gathering in Assisi.
Following a prayer service with Christian leaders, including Orthodox Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople and Anglican Archbishop Justin Welby of Canterbury, the pope joined religious leaders from around the world to appeal for peace and unity." CatholicNews

Crimson Skirt?

In the evening withhold not thy hand.
  Ecclesiastes 11:6
"In the evening of the day opportunities are plentiful:
men return from their labour, and the
zealous soul-winner finds time to tell abroad the love of Jesus. Have I no evening work for Jesus?
If I have not, let me no longer
withhold my hand from a service
which requires abundant labor.

Sinners are perishing for lack of knowledge;
he who loiters may find his skirts crimson with the blood of souls.

Jesus gave both His hands to the nails,
how can I keep back one of mine from His blessed work?

Night and day He toiled and prayed for me,
how can I give a single hour to the pampering of my flesh with luxurious ease?

Up, idle heart;
stretch out thy hand to work,
or uplift it to pray; ...

Life is so short that a
morning of manhood's vigor,
and an evening of decay,
make the whole of it."

Creation Moment 9/21/2016 - Same Author

"Those who question the reliability of the Scripture records have let go their anchor and are left to beat about upon the rocks of infidelity. When they find themselves incapable of measuring the Creator and His works by their own imperfect knowledge of science, they question the existence of God and attribute infinite power to nature.
In true science there can be nothing contrary to the teaching of the word of God, for both have the same Author. A correct understanding of both will
always prove them to be in harmony. Truth, whether in nature or in revelation, is harmonious with itself in all its manifestations. But the mind not enlightened by God's Spirit will ever be in darkness in regard to His power. This is why human ideas in regard to science so often contradict the teaching of God's word."

Who is MICHAEL?

"The identity of “Michael the archangel” in the Bible has caused some controversy amongst Bible students of all denominations. Some say that it is actually Jesus before He was born as a baby on earth. Others say that it is just an Archangel with no connection to Jesus at all — an archangel — and therefore couldn’t be the Son of God.

G32 ἄγγελος aggelos (ang’-el-os) n.

  1. a messenger
  2. (especially) an “angel” of God
  3. (of evil, Satan) a demon
  4. (by implication) a person carrying forth a message from God, i.e. a servant (a disciple, pastor, elder, prophet, etc.)
  5. (also, by implication) a thing or event carrying forth a message from God, i.e. a hardship (pestilence, wind, etc.), or an animal (donkey, locusts, etc.)) [from aggello “to bring tidings” (possibly derived from G71)]

So who is Michael?

Only five verses in the Bible mention Michael. They are:
Jude 1:9: Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the

body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee.
Daniel 10:13: But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days: but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I remained there with the kings of Persia.
Daniel 10:21: But I will shew thee that which is noted in the scripture of truth: and there is none that holdeth with me in these things, but Michael your prince.
Daniel 12:1: And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book.
Revelation 12:7: And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,
Only two verses actually mention the word “archangel”.
ARCHANGEL / MICHAEL TEXT #1
For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the *archangel*, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first. (1 Thess 4:16 )
Who raises the dead with His voice? Not a created angel, indeed not even a created archangel. The shout is given with the voice of the “archangel”, the LORD Jesus Christ Himself:
For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself; And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation. (John 5:26-28)
It is the voice of Jesus Christ (the Son of man) that raises the dead.
ARCHANGEL / MICHAEL TEXT #2
Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee. (Jude 1:9)
This verse is a virtual duplicate of another Old Testament event-
And he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the “angel of the LORD”, and Satan standing at his right hand to resist him. And the LORD said unto Satan, The LORD rebuke thee, O Satan; even the LORD that hath chosen Jerusalem rebuke thee: is not this a brand plucked out of the fire? (Zech 3:1,2)
In both Jude 9 and Zech 3:1-2 it is Jesus, the “angel of the LORD” who is also “Michael the archangel”, contending with Satan for both Moses and Joshua.
ARCHANGEL / MICHAEL TEXT #3
But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days: but, lo, *Michael*,
one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I remained there with the kings of Persia (Daniel 10:13)

The prince of the kingdom of Persia is a reference to Satan, and Michael refers again to Jesus. It is the created angel Gabriel that is speaking with Daniel (See Dan 8:16, 9:21). Daniel 10:13 is probably the most difficult verse regarding Michael: “But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days: but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me.” It appears at first glance that Michael is only “one of” the chief princes.
This is an unfortunate translation in the King James. The word “one” comes from the Hebrew word “echad,” which is also frequently translated as “first,” as in the president’s wife being called “first lady.” (See Genesis 1:5; 8:13.)
This changes the whole meaning of the verse to Michael being first of, greatest or highest of, to the chief of princes—again a reference to Jesus. The prince of the kingdom of Persia who withstood the angel was no doubt the devil who frequently appears working in the shadow of earthly monarchs such as the king of Babylon, the king of Tyre, and the Roman power (Isaiah 14:4, Ezekiel 28:2, Revelation 12:4). And remember that Jesus calls Satan “the prince of this world” (John 12:31).
ARCHANGEL / MICHAEL TEXT #4
But I will show thee that which is noted in the scripture of truth: and there is none that holdeth with me in these things, but Michael your prince. (Dan 10:21 )
In Daniel 10:13 we see an interesting scenario where Daniel is praying to God asking Him to send an angel to explain a vision that he’d had earlier but could not understand. We read in that chapter that Gabriel was dispatched to answer Daniel’s request but couldn’t get through to him for 21 days because the prince of Persia withstood him. In other words, the angel met with resistance from the prince of Persia who tried to prevent him from reaching Daniel with the message concerning the vision. In verse 13, we learn that Michael goes to Gabriel reach Daniel. The implication is that Michael came to provide reinforcements to Gabriel since the prince of Persia was preventing him from reaching Daniel for 21 days.
Notice here that the angel refers to Michael as your Prince. Who was Daniel’s prince? In the previous chapter, we see the answer. In Daniel 9:25, Daniel’s Messiah is called the prince, which is another clear indication of Michael’s identity! So Gabriel is saying that Michael the archangel is Jesus, who knows all the truth of Scripture.
ARCHANGEL / MICHAEL TEXT #5
And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy
people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book. And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.Dan 12:1,2
Michael standing up is a reference to the second coming of Jesus at the end of time when He delivers His people, those listed in the Lamb’s book of life, to include resurrecting those that sleep in the dust to everlasting life.
And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood. (Rev 1:5 )
ConclusionWe have come to the end of our study and are seeing clearly now that
Michael is none other than Jesus Christ."

FLOOD stories: in Percentages

And God said unto Noah,
The end of all flesh is come before me;
Genesis 6:13
"There are approximately 270 known Flood stories. Although these traditions have been modified through the ages and some have taken on fantastic elements, most of them have certain basic elements in common:
  • 88% of them single out a favored individual or family.
  • 70% point to survival due to a boat.
  • 66% see the Flood coming as a result of human wickedness.
  • 67% speak of animals saved along with human beings.
  • 57 % record that the survivors end up on a mountain.
  • 66% indicate that the hero receives warning of the coming catastrophe.
Critics sometimes claim that these flood stories came from recent contact with Christian missionaries, but this claim will not stand up; most of the stories were gathered and documented by anthropologists who were uninterested in confirming the truth of the Bible. In addition to this, these common tales of a worldwide flood are filled with fanciful and pagan elements, evidently the result of the telling and re-telling of the story for extended periods of time in a non-Biblical society. It should also be noted that the ancient accounts were written by people who very much opposed the Hebrew-Christian tradition." StandToReason

ARCHAEOLOGY: Sha’arayim

"Archaeologists in Israel have discovered what they believe to be the site of a biblical city mentioned
in the story of David and Goliath.
Charisma News reports that the two-gated city is thought to be around 3,000 years old. Its modern name is Khirbet Qeiyafa and it is in Israel’s Elah Valley.
Archaeologists believe the city was referenced in the Old Testament and that its name during biblical times was Sha’arayim, which is Hebrew for “two gates.” The city is mentioned in 1 Samuel 17: 52 which says, “And the men of Israel and Judah rose with a shout and pursued the Philistines as far as Gath and the gates of Ekron, so that the wounded Philistines fell on the way from Shaaraim as far as Gath and Ekron.”
Scientists used carbon-14 dating of some 28 charred olive pits to determine that the city flourished at the end of the eleventh century B.C. through the early tenth century, which included the days of King Saul and David.
"No one can argue with this data," said Proffessor Yosef Garfinkel, Yigal Yadin Chair of Archeology at the Institute of Archeology at Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
Professor Garfinkel, along with Professor Michal Hazel of Southern Adventist University of Tennessee, led the excavations.
The excavation of the city has been going on for seven years, but the public is finally able to explore the findings through a Bible Lands Museum exhibit that recently opened in Jerusalem."

Pre- Flood Population

Description of Calculations
"Based on the numerical values in Genesis, the life-spans, generation lengths, and childbearing ages were analyzed using an electronic spreadsheet called Mathcad 7 (2). The results were plotted and range of probable values determined, representing the world population at the time the flood
occurred.

The population was calculated using the formula given below. This formula was published by Henry Morris (3) and calculates the population of the world at the time of the Flood. P(n) is the population after n generations which begins with one man and one woman. The number of generations is represented by n. A value for n can be obtained by dividing the total time period by the number of years per generation.

The number of generations that are alive when P(n) is evaluated is represented by x. For example, if x equals 2, the generations that are alive are generations n and n-1. The value of c represents half the number of children in the family. If each family has only two children c would equal 1 and the population growth rate would be zero.
The calculations were made using Mathcad 7 .... Both x and y scales are logarithmic. The number of children per family are varied from 10 to 3. Several "runs" are made using different values for n. The child bearing ages are obtained by dividing 1656 by n. The result is used to establish the average age for childbirth and therefore, the length of each generation. The population is evaluated in five groups, consisting of the following:
1. Sixteen generations (n=16), each generation is 103.5 years. The life-spans are 900 years (x=9). The calculations begin with 10 children per family and are minimized to 3 children per family.
2. Eighteen generations (n=18), each generation is 92 years. The life-spans are 900 years (x=9). The calculations begin with 10 children per family and are minimized to 3 children per family.
3. Twenty generations (n=20), each generation is 82.8 years. The life-spans are 900 years (x=9). The calculations begin with 10 children per family and are minimized to 3 children per family.
4. Twenty-two generations (n=22), each generation is 75.3 years. The life-spans are 900 years (x=9). The calculations begin with 10 children per family and are minimized to 3 children per family.
Additional data points were generated, this time assuming that the population may have been between 1 to 40 billion. The same life-spans were used as in the previous (900 years). The generation lengths are also the same (16 to 22). The range of children per family is varied from 8.6 to 4.8. These values appear to be more in line with what is mentioned in scripture. (Although, scripture isn't clear as to what all cases may have been.)

Conclusions
Although it is difficult to obtain an actual value of world population at the time of the flood, 5 to17 billion people would appear to be reasonable populations, with
an average of around 10 billion. The best ages for childbirth would be 80.8 to 92 years with 6 to 7 children per family. This would be 20 to 18 generations produced from Adam to the Flood in 1656. The Book of Genesis indicates (Chapter 5) that each family had at least 5 children.
However, Noah apparently had only 3 children. (It is possible that he could have had sons and daughters that aren't recorded and who weren't on the ark.)
Genesis Chapter 5 states that each person had "sons and daughters" in addition to the son whose chronology is given. Since a plural is used to describe the number of sons and daughters, a minimum of two sons and two daughters are assumed. Therefore, a reasonable value would appear to be a range of 5 to 8 children per family.
Using 5 to 8 children per family, the population falls with in a range of ~2 billion to 11.5 billion (over the range of 16 to 22 generations).
It is interesting that today's population of approximately 6 billion fall within this category.

A reasonable value for the antediluvian childbearing age appears to be approximately 90 years. Genesis uses a range of 65 to 500 years, for the first born in the families that are listed. Noah is the only one mentioned who waited 500 years before starting his family. We are not told why. Therefore, Noah is an exception to the standard. (As mentioned above, Noah could have had other sons and daughters who are not recorded.)

The other oldest were Methuselah (187 years), Lamech (182 years) and Jared (162 years). The rest began their families at between 65 and 105 years of age. Adam is listed as being 130 when Seth was born. We don't know his age at the time Cain and Abel were born. The age of the antediluvians when they started their families is rather strange in contrast to today.

If the population reached over a billion, there would tend to be some logistical problems in feeding and caring for the population (clothing, housing, jobs, etc). This indicates that they would have required a higher level of technology than what we currently give them credit for."

IN the NEWS - Mexico

Righteousness exalteth a nation:
but sin is a reproach to any people.
Proverbs 14:34

"Mexicos Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) has just lost its 86-year dominance of Mexicos

state governments in a massive electoral upset following a new initiative by Mexican president and PRI member Enrique Peña Nieto to amend the constitution to create homosexual “marriage.”
For the first time since the PRI was created in 1929, the party no longer holds a majority of state governorships. Out of 17 states holding elections on June 5, the PRI won only five states and lost four states with 19% of the country’s population. The result is that the PRI now holds the governorship in only 15 of the country’s 31 states, with 45% of Mexicos population. The party is also out of power in the nation’s Federal District.

The president’s initiative, announced on May 17, includes a massive propaganda campaign to convince public school students and the population in general that homosexuality and transgenderism are normal and morally acceptable, as well as membership in the United Nations’ “LGBT Core Group,” a coalition of nations promoting the homosexual agenda worldwide.

Peña Nieto’s new pro-gay offensive was met with condemnation by the leadership of the Catholic Church in Mexico as well as the creation of the National Front for the Family, a coalition of over a
thousand organizations united to defeat the initiative and to protect the traditional definition of marriage. The National Front for the Family held protests throughout the country on June 1 and 2, and PRI elected officials began to abandon the president, stating their opposition to the initiative and promising their constituents they would vote against it.

The cause of the PRI’s defeat cited most often in the Mexican media was the president’s homosexual “marriage” initiative. Although it remains to be proved that the PRI’s massive electoral loss was due to the unpopularity of the proposed constitutional amendment, polls indicate that Mexicans are both dissatisfied with Peña Nieto’s presidency and opposed to homosexual “marriage.” Lifesite

James White: On 538 A.D. - 1798 A.D.

"The only rule given us in the Bible is, that when a day is used as a
symbol, it stands for a year. Eze.4:6; Num.14:34. The ordinary Jewish year, which must be used as the basis of reckoning, contained three hundred and sixty days. Three years and a half contained twelve hundred and sixty days. Each day standing for a year, we have twelve hundred and sixty years for the continuation of this horn.

Did the papacy possess dominion that length of time? The answer again is Yes.

The edict of the emperor Justinian, dated A.D. 533, made the bishop of Rome the head of all the churches. But this edict could not go into effect till the Arian Ostrogoths, the last of the three horns that were plucked up to make room for the
papacy, were driven from Rome, and this was not accomplished till A.D. 538. The edict would have been of no effect had this latter event not been accomplished; hence from this latter year we are to date, as this was the earliest point where the
saints were in reality in the hands of this power. From this point did the papacy hold supremacy for twelve hundred and sixty years? Exactly.

At the close of the long period of its blasphemous and bloody rule, judgment finally sits upon the papacy. The time had come for the prophetic words of Rev.13:10, to be fulfilled: “He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity; he that killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword. Revelation 13:10” From A.D. 538, the clearly defined date for the commencement of this prophetic period, measures 1260 years, and we are brought to A.D. 1798, when Berthier, a French general, entered Rome, proclaimed a Republic, took the pope a prisoner, and for a time abolished the papacy. And it has never since enjoyed the privileges and immunities which it possessed before."

IN the NEWS - Beating the Morality out of Christendom

All of Chrsitendom should be Horrified by what the  so-called U.S. Commission on Civil Rights has said.....

The Whitehouse lit up in the gay flag colors
"Can an existing religious liberty protections exist alongside recently won rights by gay and lesbian Americans? Most of the members of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights appear to think not.
The commission, a bipartisan body that has for decades made non-binding recommendations to the

president and Congress, released a report on Sept. 7 that calls for reining in religious liberty protections in favor of non-discrimination statutes aimed at protecting L.G.B.T. Americans. While that view is not new in the debate over what kinds of protections religious institutions deserve, the tone of some of the commission’s members is raising eyebrows.
Disney lit up in gay flag colors to

The phrases ‘religious liberty’ and ‘religious freedom’ will stand for nothing except hypocrisy so long as they remain code words for discrimination, intolerance, racism, sexism, homophobia, Islamophobia, Christian supremacy or any form of intolerance,” the chairman of the commission, Martin R. Castro, wrote in the report.
The biggest takeaway is that the commission says that anti-discrimination statutes enjoy a primacy of place over religious freedom protections,” he said. “It’s quite striking because as a matter of American constitutional law that's not true.”
He said most R.F.R.A. cases aren’t “9,000 degree culture war issues” but suspects that the commissioners are trying to anticipate future battles over health care, such as religiously-affiliated hospitals that do not wish to perform gender-reassignment surgery, for instance.
In recent years, a handful of cases involving vendors who say their religious beliefs prevent them from providing services to same-sex marriage ceremonies has shifted the debate about religious accommodations into the realm of the culture wars." ANCR

RESPONSE:
This kind of BIGOTRY & VITRIOLIC HATE by these liberals should have every Christian worried about FREEDOM. Using the LGBT club to beat the morality out of Christendom is exactly what is happening here via the powers of the U.S. government (as well as at the local & state level, as just posted recently about Massachussetts).
But --wow---they want to force church hospitals to perform transgender surgery, men paying to have the mutilating their bodies done in a hospital (If someone wanted to mutilate their body in any other way we would admit they need mental help)....all this erosion of religious freedom to placate nonsense.
Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; ....But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all. Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed.
...And don’t forget Sodom and Gomorrah and their neighboring towns, which were filled with immorality and every kind of sexual perversion. Those cities were destroyed by fire and serve as a warning....

Creation Moment 9/18/2016 - Creation in Hosea

"Hosea
Creation in Hosea is closely linked to the theme of the creation of Israel as a nation, again as with Amos in a context of pending judgment. Creation is not only analogous to history, but is history itself.

Hosea begins to develop his creation theology with an allusive description of de-creation in Hosea 4:1-3, in which an interesting reversal of the order of creation as presented in Genesis 1 takes place. God is having a “controversy, case” with or against Israel (Hosea 4:1), which in the relationship-focused context of Hosea could be better understood as a quarrel between husband and wife that also constitutes the underlying metaphor of the book.

Based on Israel’s sins (vs. 2), Hosea 4:3 invokes judgment by introducing the creation, viz. the anti-creation theme: “Therefore the land will mourn, and all who live in it will waste away; the beasts of the field, the birds of the heavens, and the fish of the sea will be extinguished (my translation). The three groups of animals represent the three spheres in which life is found on Earth, and the reversal of their order as known from creation in Genesis 1 invokes the idea of judgment as de-creation, where creation just shrivels up when confronted with and abused by sin.         The affinity between Hosea 6:2 and Deuteronomy 32:39 can hardly be overlooked in this context and constitutes another creation motif in Hosea, and the reference to Yahweh as the one who puts to death but also resurrects is pointing to the God of Creation, which is a theme strongly developed in the Song of Moses. Hosea 8:14 picks up on the same motif, again establishing a relationship with the Pentateuch in using the divine creation epithet “Maker,” which also occurs repeatedly in the Song of Moses (Deut. 32:6, 15, 18). However, the notion of creation leads toward indictment and sentence, not toward praise.

Possibly the strongest creation text in Hosea is found in 11:1, and it synthesizes the passages mentioned above into the metaphor of Yahweh as the Creator and Procreator of Israel: “‘When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called My son.’” This verse connects to Hosea 1:10 (“‘They will be called “children of the living God”’” (NIV), and to the Exodus, which is described in creation terminology.

Thus, the creation of Israel as a nation during the historic events connected with the exodus from Egypt becomes part of God’s creation. Whom God elects, He also creates, and with that an intimate and eternal bond is created like that between a father and his son."

Papal Notes - Calendar of Harlots

"Hopes for Christian unity may not be spring fresh, but Pope Francis' fall calendar is filled with
ecumenical appointments.

Even as developments within Christian denominations seem to be solidifying differences that would make full unity difficult, there is no sign that the desire to meet and dialogue is waning. And, in fact, divided Christians are finding more opportunities to pray together and engage in joint work to help the poor and needy.

Pope Francis will open his season of ecumenical engagements Sept. 20 when he joins other Christian leaders and representatives of other religions in Assisi to commemorate the 30th anniversary of St. John Paul II's interreligious peace gathering. Ten days later, Pope Francis flies to Georgia, a predominantly Orthodox nation. In October, he will meet and pray with Anglican Archbishop Justin Welby of Canterbury and, at the end of the month, he will fly to Sweden to take part in ecumenical events launching commemorations of the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation.

The pope's visit to Assisi is scheduled to last just eight hours. But standing alongside Archbishop Welby and Orthodox Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople -- as well as Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu and Sikh leaders -- will be an affirmation of a shared belief that true faith always seeks peace.

The pope's fall ecumenical activities will culminate in Lund, Sweden, Oct. 31 when he participates in a Catholic-Lutheran commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the beginning of the Protestant Reformation.
According to the Lutheran World Federation, co-host of the event, the gathering "will highlight the solid ecumenical developments between Catholics and Lutherans and the joint gifts received through dialogue."
In 2013, the Vatican and the federation issued a document on the
anniversary commemorations, insisting "no one who is theologically responsible can celebrate the division of Christians from one another."

Instead, the document "From Conflict to Communion," urges Catholics and Lutherans to recognize Martin Luther wanted to reform the church, not splinter it. After 500 years, it said, Christians may find it easier to see and experience their differences, but the world is in need of a united Christian witness and the season for that is now." CNS
