"Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders on Monday dismissed the debate over late-term abortion up to the moment of birth, calling it a “political issue” but ultimately saying he thinks it should remain legal.
Sanders made the comments during a Fox News town hall in Bethlehem, Pa., with host Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum.
MacCallum asked Sanders, “With regard to abortion, do you believe that a woman should be able to terminate a pregnancy up until the moment of birth?”
“Look,” Sanders responded. “I think that that happens very, very rarely, and I think that this is being made into a political issue. … But at the end of the day, I believe that the decision over abortion belongs to a woman and her physician – not the federal government, not the state government, and not the local government.”
Pro-life leaders criticized Sanders’ comments.
--Lila Rose, founder and president of Live Action, called them “total barbarism.”
--Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the pro-life Susan B. Anthony List, tweeted about Sanders, “No moral courage to protect the weakest. Health care for all except the little one on the sonogram.”
