"The Primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church has said that churches need to change if they are to reverse the decline in religious affiliation in Scotland.

Bishop David Chillingworth was responding to the latest figures from the 2011 Census, which revealed that in Scotland, 54% of people identify themselves as Christian, a decrease of 11% since 2001. At the same time, the number identifying themselves as atheist has risen by 9% over the last 10 years to 37% today.
"The figures for religious affiliation in Scotland are a significant challenge for churches. Nominal membership of traditional churches is swiftly changing into 'no religion'," said Bishop Chillingworth.
"The reasons are clear. Traditional patterns of church life have difficulty attracting people in a mobile, fast-changing and increasingly sophisticated society. Congregations are communities of affection which gather in time-hallowed buildings and they find change challenging." ChristianPost

1) Nominal=No Religion...well, yeah.....Nominal means in name only so at least they are being honest now when they answer a poll as to where they really stand as it relates to "church"...

2) As for using the excuse of a "sophisticated society" & a "mobile" society as a reason, let the Scriptures respond to "society" on that - And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares.

ARCHAEOLOGY: Tekhelet - Blue?

"In the Bible, a shade of blue called tekhelet was God’s chosen color for the ancient Israelites. Tekhelet drapes adorned Solomon’s Temple, and tekhelet robes were worn by Israel’s high priests.
Israelites “were commanded to tie one string of tekhelet to the corner fringes (Hebrew, tzitzit) of their garments as a constant reminder of their special relationship with God” (Numbers 15:38–39). The tradition of blue tzitzit still exists today.

But what was the actual color of ancient tekhelet and blue tzitzit? Was it a shade of blue or was it closer to purple? Blue tzitzit and tekhelet-colored fabrics were widely worn and traded throughout the ancient Mediterranean, but by the Roman period, only the emperor could wear tekhelet.
A century ago, Isaac Herzog, who would later become Israel’s first chief rabbi, researched tekhelet for his dissertation. "Imagine you’re a flower bud.  You are blind, deaf, and dumb, but somehow you know how to create beautiful artwork.  Through your efforts, a lovely rose, petunia or orchid will result.  How would you do it?  An article on Live Science suggests an amazing, though partial, answer: the bud has a map of

the finished product.  “The shape of a flower’s petals and leaves are dictated by a biological map hidden inside the flower’s growing bud,” according to a new study from the John Innes Centre and the University of East Anglia, both in the UK.

They discovered that concealed maps within the flower buds are made up of patterns of arrows that act as instructions for how each cell in the bud should grow. As such, the maps essentially influence a flower bud’s cell polarity, or the functions of the cells.

The “arrows” are made up of proteins called PIN proteins that migrate to the tips of cells.  When they concentrate, a pointed leaf results.  When they fan out, a rounded shape, like a flower petal results.  Other proteins follow the “arrows” to cause growth in those areas.  PLoS Biology discussed the paper in a little more detail.  The original paper in PLoS Biology described how the growth proteins follow the “polarity field” set up by the PIN proteins." Luke 23:43 and misplaced commas

Spot the difference between these two phrases:

1. "Verily I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise."
2. "Verily I say to you today, you will be with me in Paradise."

Exactly, the moving of the comma changes both the structure

and the meaning of the sentence.

 

The original Greek had no punctuation, so translators had to guess about where to place a comma. They decided on the common rendering of the text.

But they got it wrong. It should read: “Verily I say unto thee today, shalt thou be with me in paradise.” Jesus is saying, even though right now I don’t look like a king, I’m telling you right now that because you called me Lord and King, you’re going to be with me in heaven.

We know it’s a misplaced comma because Jesus didn’t go to heaven that day! Three days after that promise, Mary saw Jesus after His resurrection and grabbed hold of His ankles. He said, “Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father” (John 20:17). He could not have been in heaven on Friday! Sounds like the Age-To-Come crowd was similar, to a limited degree, to what the secret rapture crowd erroneously believes today about literal Jerusalem. They also, in their fanaticism, seem to have resembled the modern Pentecostal movement.

Resurrection "Spiritual"?

There are the foolish within Christianity today running around telling others that the resurrection was only spiritual and not literal. This group is a small minority. Also, if they really believe that, then why be a "Christian"?

According to the article, Samuel decides what Bible story he wants to share. Then, his after-school teacher writes the sermon. Once the sermon is written, Samuel makes any changes he wants and then memorizes the 15-minute sermon.
The article says that Samuel and his teacher sometimes discuss what Samuel will say instead of writing it down. However, his teacher says she writes down all of his introductions to his sermons for him.
Samuel started preaching back in 2011, when he was only 5 years old. He says he wants to be a pediatrician when he grows up so that he can take care of other kids, reported the newspaper.


The 3rd-grader hosts his own Christian TV show, where he preaches and interviews people. The show, called "Samuel Green Presents the Truth" airs Sunday mornings on public access television in Jackson, Miss.
Samuel has also been taping six shows for 3ABN's "Tiny Tots for Jesus" TV show, according to the article. Samuel says he isn’t forced to preach. He said it’s a choice he made and it is something he wants to do." A Sabbath Blog

ARCHAEOLOGY: Edom

"This story is one that has been repeated time and again throughout more than a century of excavations in the Holy Land. It involves a tendency to make claims based upon incomplete evidence and fails to account for the principle that absence of evidence does not equal evidence of absence.

“Minimalists” have become famous (or infamous!) for just this reason, namely, for their skepticism toward the Biblical narrative, often despite the discovery of archaeological evidence corroborating those accounts.
One point of controversy begins with the rather laconic statement in Genesis 36:31 concerning the Kingdom of Edom, whose kings reigned in the land of Edom before any king reigned over the sons of Israel. This did not attract much notice until surveys and excavations in modern Jordan began to tell a different story, one apparently at odds with the Biblical text. If this Biblical statement were true, then the kings of Edom would have necessarily antedated Saul, Israel’s first king, who ruled in the 11th century BC. The problem herein lay with the fact that no excavated site produced material consistent with state formation in the area formerly known as Edom.
These broad conclusive statements were not limited to Bible encyclopedias. None other than Israel Finkelstein of Tel Aviv University contends in his recent book The Bible Unearthed (2001; co-authored with Neil Silberman) that archaeology has made it clear there were no real kings and no state in Edom before the eighth century BC because earlier large settlements and fortresses were lacking. Notice Finkelstein’s reliance on negative (absence of) evidence in arriving at his conclusion.
Recent discoveries in the Wadi Faynan, however, have now turned the consensus concerning state formation in Edom upside down.
Here a 24-acre site is being excavated that includes numerous mounds of slag, evidence of a large-scale industry that persisted for several centuries, presumably under Edomite supervision.
Four room house at the Edomite site of Kh. En-Nahas dating as early as the 13th century BC. This and other findings at Kh. En-Nahas demonstrate that Edom was an organized political entity prior to the formation of the United Monarch of Israel...Most of the pottery can be dated to the early Iron Age II period (tenth–ninth century). There are also forms indicative of earlier periods, including locally made hole-mouth jars known as Negebite Ware. A number of imported pieces include Midianite Ware and Cypro Phoenician Black-on-Red Ware, the former of which was produced as early as the 14th century.

Not all the sites in Edom had or have been subjected to excavation. It underlines the need to temper the conclusions drawn from the absence of archaeological data, particularly in an area as little understood as Biblical Edom. With the new findings from Khirbet en-Nahas, we can once again assert that absence of evidence is most definitely not indicative of evidence of absence, wisdom that archaeologists would be well advised to observe in the future."
