Meditation Upon the PSALMS Series: Psalm 51

"
Psalm 51: From the superscription, we learn that this psalm was written sometime after David’s sin with Bath-sheba.
To David’s credit, he recognized fully how horrendous his sin was against God, blamed no one but himself, and begged for divine forgiveness.

I. Plea for Forgiveness (51:1-2).
II.  Proffer of Confession (51:3-6).
III .Prayer for Moral Cleanness (51:7-12).
IV. Promise of Renewed Service (51:13-17).
V. Petition for National Restoration (51:18-19).

Psalm 51:1 Have mercy upon me, O God, according to Thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of Thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.
Psalm 51:2 Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.
Psalm 51:3 For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin [is] ever before me.
Psalm 51:4 Against Thee, Thee only, have I sinned, and done [this] evil in Thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when Thou speakest, [and] be clear when Thou judgest.

Psalm 51:7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
David’s request is for God to take away his sin.
In forgiveness, God washes away sin.
Hyssop was used to apply the blood of the Lamb.
David knows that only the blood of the precious Lamb of God can wash him and make him white as snow.

Psalm 51:9 Hide Thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities.
Psalm 51:10 Create in me a clean heart,
O God; and renew a right spirit within me.
David prayeth the Lord to create him a new heart, not to correct his old heart.
He used the word creat (Heb. Bara), a word only used of the work of God, and showing that the change in him could be wrought only by God.
Psalm 51:11
Cast me not away from Thy presence; and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me.

Psalm 51:12
Restore unto me the joy of Thy salvation; and uphold me [with Thy] free spirit.
Psalm 51:13 [Then] will I teach transgressors Thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto Thee.
Psalm 51:17 The sacrifices of God [are] a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, Thou wilt not despise."
