"Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk was fatally shot during a speaking event at Utah Valley University on Wednesday in an apparent political assassination.
The New York Yankees held a moment of silence for Charlie before
tonight’s game.
Variety reports that MSNBC has fired political analyst Matthew Dowd due to the horrible on-air comments he made today when news broke that Charlie Kirk had been shot.
MSNBC’s President Rebecca Kutler issued the following statement regarding her network’s appalling early coverage of the assassination of Charlie Kirk:
“During our breaking news coverage of the shooting of Charlie Kirk, Matthew Dowd made comments that were inappropriate, insensitive and unacceptable. We apologize for his statements, as has he. There is no place for violence in America, political or otherwise.”
The New York Times spoke with Tanner Maxwell, the attendee at today’s event who recorded video showing a person running across the roof of the building where university officials say the shooter was:
"From Tanner Maxwell’s vantage point behind the tent under which
Mr. Kirk was speaking at Utah Valley University, he couldn’t see or hear as well as he wanted to, he said in a phone interview.
He moved to get a better view of the crowd in order to take a video to show his friends. As he pulled his phone out to start filming, he heard a single gunshot. His video, which begins immediately after the shot, captures people dropping to the ground or running for cover."
The Times also analyzed this video taken before the fatal shooting, which appears to show a person laying on the roof of the building where the shooter would have been.
The shooter remains at large at this time. The two suspects who had been detained earlier have been released, and, according to Lt. Cameron Roden of the Utah Department of Public Safety, there are currently no other suspects in custody.
Referring to this as “a dark day for our state” and “a tragic day for our nation,” Gov. Cox declared, “I want to be very clear that this is a political assassination.” He also noted that Utah has the death penalty.
