Marxism and Papism both oppose God.

Marxism openly opposes God
They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart.
Ephesians 4:18
Papism subtly opposes God.
Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; 

Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.
2 Thessalonians 2:3,4

Both accept Darwinism.

Marxism fully embraces Darwinian macro-evolution and long age chronology. Its worldview is shaped by the notion of the survival of the fittest.
For the invisible things of Him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made,....so that they are without excuse:

Papsim allows for a "God" to nudge evolution along.
For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: 

Exodus 20:11

Both have a Track Record of Blood.

Marxism racked up an estimated 100.000,000 body bags on the planet last century--infamous for its gulags, "killing fields", etc.
... the LORD will abhor the bloody and deceitful man.
Psalm 5:6
Papism racked up millions during the Dark and Middle Ages with its persecutions, inquisitions and counter-reformation wars.
And he shall speak great words against the Most High, and shall wear out the saints of the Most High...

Could it be that in the End, these two forces on the planet merge for "common ground" to implement the Mark of the Beast? 

The Marxists of the west via their cultural Marxism of today, through the Green Religion (their quest for control including for calling for government "prosecution" of so-called "climate change deniers" as both Gore and Obama have openly called for, or Biden's proposal in 2022 for a government "misinformation board" to censor free speech--starting with "climate deniers") joins the Papal forces?

btw, when government "prosecutes" for political differences---it's called on the pages of History "persecution".

This could be done in the name of Green Encyclical of Laudato Si' where the Papal entity has called for Sunday to basically be a "sabbath" for reducing our carbon-foot print.

After the Cold War the Red of Communism of the East simply morphed into the Green movement of the West. Today the Green movement not only has a strangle hold on western politicians (such as those in Holland and other European nations are turning on their own farmers) but of course is lauded by the so-called "Holy See" in Rome and even embraced by Islamic nations such as Tunisia and Saudi Arabia, etc.
We shall see.....

Marxism and Papism were more Rivals than Enemies.

Protestants have already been selling out to the Cultural Marxists on one after the other issue (on woman ordination from militant

feminism, LGBT acceptance in the aftermath of the sexual-revolution, replacing the Biblical Gospel with the Green Gospel, etc.) as Church after Church continues to surrender fully--or split into two.

As Protestantism lies shattered (externally from the pressures of Cultural Marxism and internally from watering down Scripture in the Modernist age) and since it still shares sympathy with Papism on two key doctrines (immortality of the soul and Sunday sacredness) there would be hardly any left to oppose in the public arena a major push by Papists for a Global Holy Day in the name of God, especially if papist are joined in the name of mother earth by the Marxists with the power of government.
