Commentary of Charles Spurgeon, Adam Clarke & Matthew Henry
And the evening and the morning were the first day.
Vs.5
It is a good thing to have the right names for things. A Let us also always call persons and
things by their right names: “God called the light Day, and the darkness
he called Night.” ,,,,Darkness first and light afterwards. It is so with us spiritually;
first darkness, then light.
I suppose that, until we get to heaven, ....we must expect darkness as well as light. They
will make up our first day and our last day, till we get where there are
no days but the Ancient of Days.
The evening
and the morning were the first day. The darkness of the evening was before
the light of the morning, that it might serve for a foil to it, to set it off,
and make it shine the brighter.
Truly
the light is sweet (Eccl. 11:7); it rejoiceth the heart, Prov. 15:30.
