Olsen, however, is wrong. He has evidently confused two categories. It is quite true that Kenneth Hagin is the main prosperity preacher who popularized word-faith doctrine--the notion that the words we speak determine the blessings we receive. Hagin borrowed that doctrine from an earlier, lesser-known preacher--E. W. Kenyon. Kenyon had been strongly influenced by the teachings of New Thought, a 19th-century metaphysical cult similar to Christian Science. So Hagin's word-faith doctrines had deeply cultic roots, but the idea fit perfectly with the prosperity doctrines that were already being taught by A. A. Allen, Oral Roberts, Jack Coe, and other faith-healers. The two ideas were natural complements to one another.
In Oral Roberts: An American Life, biographer David Edwin Harrell, Jr., describes how Roberts discovered the prosperity gospel and how it became the centerpiece of his message. One day he opened his Bible randomly and spotted 3 John 2: "Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth." He showed it to his wife, Evelyn, and "They talked excitedly about the verse's implications. Did it mean they could have a 'new car,' 'a new house,' a 'brand-new ministry?' In later years, Evelyn looked back on that morning as the point of embarkation: 'I really believe that that very morning was the beginning of this worldwide ministry that he has had, because it opened up his thinking."
After he embraced prosperity doctrine, Oral Roberts' best-known and most far-reaching brainchild was the Seed-Faith message. Roberts taught that money and material things donated to his organization were the seeds of prosperity and material blessings from God, and that God promises to multiply in miraculous ways whatever is given--and give many times more back to the donor. It was a simple, quasi-spiritual get-rich-quick scheme that appealed mainly to poor, disadvantaged, and desperate people." GTY.org

IN the NEWS - Charlie Brown, Atheists & a Church

"LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (CBS Atlanta) — Charlie Brown has been caught in the crossfire of the “war on Christmas” mantra.
KARK-TV reports that some parents were upset that Terry Elementary School in Little Rock wanted to take children to go see a play of “A Charlie Brown Christmas” at a local church.

Is inside the Church the appropriate place
for this play? Just asking....

“The parents that we know in this situation are reluctant to speak up because they are concerned about their kids being singled out and bullied,” Anne Orsi, a lawyer and member of the Arkansas Society of Free Thinkers, told KARK.
The group is a volunteer organization of secular individuals whose goals are to “promote public acceptance of nonbelievers” and “defend science education and the separation of church and state.”
Orsi said on the group’s Facebook page that the school is “sponsoring field trips to evangelical churches.”
“While everyone loves Charlie Brown, the religious content of the program is a problem, as is the trip to a church to see it,” she said.
Parents had mixed feelings about the controversy.
Shamar Stokes told KARK that he has a problem with the religious aspect but, in the end, “wouldn’t have a problem with my child going to see Charlie Brown.”
One unidentified parent did have a problem, though.
“I think church and school should be kept completely separate at all times,” the parent told the station.
“A Charlie Brown Christmas,” which was first released in 1965, is the story about Charlie Brown looking past the commercialism that surrounds Christmas and finds the true meaning of the day through his friend Linus." CBS

IN the NEWS - Golden Dawn in Greece (Case Study of rising militants due to financial crises)

"ATHENS, Greece - As the economies in the Eurozone continue to crumble, some experts have begun to worry about the rise of fascism, especially in Greece.

Video shot on Sept. 7 in the Greek town of Rafina shows members of the fascist group Golden Dawn marching into a market used by immigrants to sell their wares.

Golden Dawn checked for business permits then destroyed the stands of those who can't produce a document.

One of the leaders of the raid, who is also a sitting parliament member, George Germenis, said they did it to honor the Virgin Mary.

As Greek society continues to unravel, Golden Dawn is rising up. Greece faces of an acute shortage of jobs, food, medicine and leadership. And Greeks are looking for a savior.

The economic crisis has caused more Greeks to lose faith in the political class. They're looking elsewhere for answers.

"Nothing changes. Only with a revolution can things change," a man named Stavros, a pensioner, said.

"If this political system doesn't change for new people to come in, Greece will not move forward. We are living moments from the Apocalypse," another pensioner, Anna, said.

Employment among young adults has hit an incredible 55 percent. Experts fear a replay of the 1930s, when a depression in Germany helped usher Hitler to power.

Golden Dawn's official support is now between 10 and 12 percent, but is probably higher. In a nation where politicians don't seem to have an answer to a crisis that has brought Greece to its knees, the appeal of Golden Dawn is that it has an answer, even if it's the wrong answer.

Golden Dawn has begun to take on some government functions, even giving out food, but to ethnic Greeks only. Greek police, who reportedly support the party "in larger numbers, have told the public to go to Golden Dawn for help."

But for immigrants and refugees, Golden Dawn is a nightmare. CBN News interviewed immigrants in Athens who are forced to hide in their apartment to keep from being attacked in the street.

They escaped from Afghanistan, but now want to go home, saying coming to Greece is the biggest mistake they ever made.

"This is very bad. You can imagine one political party with weapons, with knives, they are going out in the roads, and this is politics? This is not politics," Javed Aslam, head of the Pakistani community in Greece, said. "That's why we are worried so much."

A Golden Dawn leader summed it up to the group's followers, saying, "Their nightmare is here. We are. You are. It's the Golden Dawn." CBN

"What on earth are science reporters doing promoting communism by “framing” the language of redistributive tax policy?
One might hope that science should steer clear of political ideology. But look at this headline that appeared on both Science Daily and PhysOrg: “Want to influence support for redistributive tax policies? Choose your words carefully.” This sounds like naked advocacy for income redistribution, a key element of communism. The articles are unmodified echoes of a press release from the Association for Psychological Science, making these two leading science media sites complicit in advocating a communist principle.
The article described supposed experiments that showed conservatives less likely to oppose income redistribution if the questions were phrased in terms of how much the rich made over the poor, versus how much less the poor made with respect to the rich. The pseudo-empiricism of this “experiment” was undermined by a clear goal of figuring out how to soften the opposition to redistribution.
Redistribution of wealth is a core concept of communism. Perceiving the distance between poor and rich, Marx built his system as a means of taking from the rich and giving to the poor (income redistribution), with the revolutionary government taxed with punishing the bourgeousie to reward the proletariat, to achieve a utopia of equality of outcome. Capitalists, instead, believe in equality of opportunity. They believe that the free market motivates the entrepreneur to take risks with the hope of reward. The capitalist is further incentivized to please customers by lowering prices and creating better products. Wealth is not seen as a zero-sum game. Instead, the economy grows, the pie enlarges, and everyone benefits when free market competition creates wealth. Capitalism is built on initiative, responsibility and reward rather than class envy.
The psychologists at Carnegie Mellon employed the euphemism “income inequality,” a phrase conjuring up class warfare. That the researchers were interested in softening opposition to the communist principle of redistribution of wealth is seen in the statement that the research suggested “a simple manipulation of language might be able to influence support for policies aimed at addressing income inequality.” But should scientists create tools of psychological manipulation to enable the efforts of political idealogues?

One can conceive the experiment being framed in an opposite way. Anti-communist psychologists (if such a species exists) might frame their questions in terms of “equality of opportunity” and “personal responsibility” or freedom. They might use liberal subjects to measure how much the “framing” of the presentation changed their views. That the Carnegie Mellon psychologists did not do this is further evidence of a pro-communist bias in their construction of experiment. It undermines any pretense of objectivity. An objective experiment (assuming experiments on humans are valid in the first place) should have used equal numbers of conservative and liberal subjects (assuming such categories could be reliably identified), and had a control group. Even so, experiments on psychological manipulation raise serious ethical issues. This appears to be an experiment for identifying the most effective psychopolitical propaganda, not a scientific experiment.
In another example of trying to influence the election, Live Science used scare tactics to suggest, “Could Romney Overturn Roe v. Wade?” If this were a simple neutral question answered with facts and probabilities, it might claim to be scientific. The language, however, described Roe v. Wade as “the Supreme Court decision that protected a woman’s right to have an abortion” instead of “the decision that denied an unborn baby’s right to life” (life being one of the inalienable rights deemed self-evident in the Declaration of Independence). In other words, the article scares the reader that Romney could reduce an alleged right, not that Obama is reducing a more fundamental right. Further evidence of advocacy is seen at the end of the article: “Pass it on: It’s possible Roe vs. Wade could be overturned if a new Supreme Court judge is appointed who takes a stance against abortion rights.” Should a science report tell its readers to pass it on? Should it use the phrase “abortion rights” instead of “right to life”?"
