I. Israel’s Freedom Celebrated (129:1-4);
II. Israel’s Foe Imprecated
(129:5-8).
Psalm 129:1 Many a time have they afflicted me from my youth, may Israel now say:Psalm 129:2 Many a time have they afflicted me from my youth: yet they have not prevailed against me.
Psalm 129:4 The LORD [is] righteous: He hath cut asunder the cords of the wicked.
Psalm 129:5 Let them all be confounded and turned back that hate Zion.
Psalm 129:6 Let them be as the grass [upon] the housetops, which withereth afore it groweth up:
Grass would wither or dry up, of course, if it were pulled up or cut down, but the grass here spoken of withers even before this is done.It has no depth of earth to sustain it; having sprouted, and begun to grow, it soon dies.
A perfect image of feebleness and desolation; of hopes begun only to be disappointed.
Grass growing in this manner, does not need to be killed, it dies of its own account. That is what evil man is doing."
