Creation Moment 2/22/2014 - "Fair" Game in South Carolina

"A South Carolina state senator was recently slammed for his opposition to proposed science education standards after he raised concerns over the promotion of evolution and natural selection.
Senator Mike Fair represents District 6 in the South Carolina General Assembly and is a member of the South Carolina Education Oversight Committee (EOC). An outspoken Christian, Senator Fair believes in intelligent design and the historicity of the Bible.

Last week, EOC members met to discuss an update to South Carolina’s science education standards. The revised standards outline academic standards for biology, chemistry, physics, and other scientific subjects.
Included in the proposed revisions is a two-page section titled, “Biological Evolution – Unity and Diversity.” The section requires students to “demonstrate an understanding of biological evolution and the unity and diversity of life on Earth.”
The proposed standards also mention numerous evolutionary terms, including “common ancestry,” “a phylogenetic tree,” “natural selection,” “genetic variation,” and “speciation.”
After reviewing the proposed standards last Monday, Senator Fair objected to the standards’ usage of evolutionary terms, especially the reference to “natural selection.”
State Superintendent of Education Mick Zais also weighed in on the issue, admitting that the creation/evolution debate is divisive.
“This has been going on here in South Carolina for a long a time,” Zais told reporters. “We ought to teach both sides and let students draw their own conclusions.”
After Fair expressed his opposition to the science standards’ evolutionary terminology, evolutionists sharply criticized his statements.
“Another uneducated and unintelligent buffoon attempting to mentally molest children into thinking that philosophy (religion) is the same as real science,” one commenter alleged. “If uneducated and unintelligent buffoons like Fair continue to be a part of education committees, students will suffer because the education they are provided will be of low to no quality.”
“Senator Fair, you are an embarrassment to your state,” another stated. “It is a travesty that South Carolina would have such an uneducated individual on the Education Committee. "A Kentucky pastor who starred in a reality show about handling snakes during church services, died Saturday night after a fatal snake bite, police said.

Pastor Gregory Jamie Coots — the star of the National Geographic Channel’s “Snake Salvation” — died at Full Gospel Tabernacle in Jesus Name in Middlesboro, Ky., after suffering a snake bite to his finger, Middlesboro police spokeswoman Jeannie Miller told NBC News on Sunday.

Coots was bitten at the church at 8:30 p.m. but died at his home two hours later, after refusing medical treatment “because of religious beliefs,” Miller said.

Handling snakes is practiced by a handful of fundamentalist churches, based on an interpretation of certain Bible verses that say true Christians should be able to handle serpents without being harmed.

National Geographic’s senior vice president of communications, Chris Albert, said the channel had no plans for another season of “Snake Salvation.”

“However, we hope to air a special tribute so people can understand Pastor Jamie and his method of worship and see that he died doing what he believed was his calling,” Albert said." NBC

"Does handling a poisonous snake prove that you are anointed of God? The Bible seems to indicate that some people will be able to take up serpents and not be harmed. Is that what Mark 16:18 really teaches?

Does the Bible encourage believers to purposefully handle poisonous snakes as a demonstration of faith? The passage often quoted to support this activity is Mark 16:17, 18, which says, “And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them, they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.” What does this passage teach?

Biblical Slavery

There are those who accuse the Bible of being "pro-slavery". But is it? No.... People who owed debt had to work to pay off their debts (sort of like indentured servants) but they also had their "freedom" from this obligation wiped out at Jubilee. This kept people from descending into a type of permanent servant status to another human.

Creation Moment 2/20/2014 - Trapped Air tells us What?

"One method of getting at the Earth's early atmosphere is to find samples of air that were trapped in very old rocks. Marty's team recently published two papers based on samples from a region of northern Australia that contains rocks formed (supposed) "billions" of years ago. Air bubbles formed inside of the ancient quartz while the silica rock was being heated in the Earth's crust. (That would likely be during the deluge).
By analysing the air inside of these rocks, it's possible to learn things such as what isotopes or types of nitrogen were present a few billion years ago. There are two types of nitrogen in abundance in Earth's atmosphere that have different atomic weights – 14N and 15N – with 15N being slightly weightier of the two.

With no protection from a magnetic field, these two forms of nitrogen escape naturally from the atmosphere and into space. This occurs when the solar wind – particles sent out by the Sun – hits Earth's atmosphere and charges (ionizes) its particles. Without a magnetic field, this charging is more intense and the nitrogen escapes more rapidly.

Marty's group discovered that nitrogen isotopes trapped in rocks that are (supposedly) "3.5 billion" years old are there in just about the same ratio as today. This means researchers "can propose Earth had a magnetic field against escape of lighter elements to space" early in its history, he said. (Probably because it was CREATED  that way from the beginning) Mars, by contrast, did not have a magnetic field and lost much of the lighter form of nitrogen over the years.

They also discovered that the partial pressure of nitrogen back then is about the same as it is today, which has implications for understanding how much carbon dioxide was in the early atmosphere. Nitrogen abundance in the atmosphere helps improve the insulating factor of carbon dioxide, which could have kept the Earth warm when the Sun was young.

The nitrogen wasn't quite enough to create this effect, however, so carbon dioxide may not be the solution. Still, the team's upper limit of partial pressure of carbon dioxide – 0.7 bars – is different from independent results based on carbon dioxide trapped in fossil soils. ARCHAEOLOGY: Merneptah Stela

"Undoubtedly, the most important mention of Israel outside the Bible is that in the Merneptah, or “Israel,” Stela. Discovered in 1896 in Merneptah's mortuary temple in Thebes by Flinders Petrie, the stela is a poetic eulogy to pharaoh Merneptah, who ruled Egypt after Rameses the Great, ca. 1212-1202 BC. Of significance to Biblical studies is a short section at the end of the poem describing a campaign to Canaan by Merneptah in the first few years of his reign, ca. 1210 BC. One line mentions Israel: “Israel is laid waste, its

seed is not.” Here we have the earliest mention of Israel outside the Bible and the only mention of Israel in Egyptian records.
Since the date of the reference to Israel in the Merneptah Stela is during the time of the judges, prior to the establishment of the monarchy, it is of crucial importance to understanding Israel's formative period. For example, a popular theory among Biblical scholars today is that Israel emerged from peoples indigenous to Canaan in the mid 12th century BC. If this is true, then Biblical history and chronology prior to ca. 1150 BC would have to be jettisoned.


The discussion of the significance of Israel in the Merneptah stela revolves around the meaning of two words: “Israel” and “seed.” A number of possibilities have been suggested, as summarized by Hasel.

Scholars have implied that the name Israel could be interpreted as Iezreel or Jezreal, the valley to the north of the country.
Another idea is that the name has a descriptive meaning (“the wearers of the side lock”) and applies to the Libyans.
Or, in the time of Merneptah, the name Israel was a geographic term referring to a territory corresponding to Canaan.
Hasel discusses the problems associated with each of these interpretations and concludes,

Israel, identified by the determinative for people, is a socioethnic unity powerful enough to be mentioned along with major city-states that were also neutralized.

Turning to the meaning of the Egyptian word prt, “seed,” there are only two possibilities, “grain” or “offspring.”
Based on the use of prt in other Egyptian texts, Hasel deduces that it refers to grain. Thus, the phrase “its seed is not” indicates that Israel's food supply was no longer in existence. Hasel observes,

We may perceive Israel within the context and information of the Merneptah stela to be a rural sedentary group of agriculturalists without its own urban city-state support system

Proponents of the “12th century emergence theory” maintain that the Israelites did not come into Canaan from outside to conquer the land around 1400 BC, as the Bible indicates. The emergence scenario would also reject the historicity of the Wilderness Wanderings, Exodus, Egyptian Sojourn and the Patriarchal narratives. However, if Israel were an established entity in Canaan already in 1210 BC, as the Merneptah Stela implies, then the 12th century emergence theory would be refuted. If Israel was well established by the end of the 13th century, it could not have come into being in the middle of the next century." CA

"They are associated with that long-wave pattern, so they are connected in that sense," he said.

That "long-wave pattern" is like a whip that got swung in California and has cracked in all the other places.

Down the road a bit, at the Winter Olympics, it's practically springtime in Sochi, and it's that same jet-stream dragging in warmth that's boosting temperatures well above freezing.

But it gets even worse.

The jet-stream is moving slower than in past years, which means that all that ugly weather is hovering over places for longer periods, plaguing them with more of its nastiness than usual.

It has weather-beaten people in many parts of the world groaning the same moan: "I've never seen weather like this before." Are they exaggerating? Maybe not.

For the first time in its history, the California Water Project - a system of canals and reservoirs that provide water to two thirds of the people in the state's Central Valley -- set its allocation for all of them to zero.

If you haven't been living under a rock, you've heard about or felt the winter ills that have walloped the nation's Southeast.

About two weeks ago, less than three inches of snow turned the region's largest city into a gridlocked parking lot, where thousands of motorists sat for as much as 20 hours in their cars, while lows dipped into the teens.

Not that the Northeast is not used to snow, after all it's winter, and it's normal there. But the frequency of heavy snows has had leaders in the region huffing for a break.

Temple of Rats

"Karni Mata Temple is a famous Hindu temple dedicated to Karni Mata at Deshnoke, in India. It is also known as the Temple of Rats.
The most intriguing aspect of the temple is the 20,000-odd rats that call this temple home. These holy rats are called kabbas, and
Legend has it that Laxman, Karni Mata's stepson (or the son of one of her storytellers), drowned in a pond

in Kapil Sarovar in Kolayat Tehsil while he was attempting to drink from it. Karni Mata implored Yama, the god of death, to revive him. First refusing, Yama eventually relented, permitting Laxman and all of Karni mata's male children to be reincarnated as rats.
The story behind rats at the temple is different according to some local folklores. Local folklores say that 20,000 strong army men deserted a nearby battle and came running to deshnoke. Upon learning the sin of desertion, punishable by death, Karni Mata spared the lives but made them rats and offered the temple as the future place of stay. Creation Moment 2/17/2014 - Hi-Five the banana tree

 "For example, human DNA sequences are around 50% identical to banana sequences. You have to go back in time a long way to find a common ancestor between humans and bananas, but ultimately they have both emerged from the same family tree, the tree of life, and that is the reason they may share similar characteristics." So if banana trees & humans are related, then "a long way" back, when the evolutionary process split off in different directions (one towards eventually humans & the other towards banana trees) did the DNA on the path towards humans signal the DNA on it's way towards becoming banana trees?
Did it include an set of instructions of how to grow roots to pull nutrients out of the ground, package it in an edible format for the future digestive track of humans and then produce it in a form for easy pickings off a tree? Also, did the DNA that split off from the banana tree-to-be get a High-Five at the departure point of the evolutionary split from the human-to-be DNA?

Of course, the interaction of the banana tree (its purpose) with that of humans makes more sense if Genesis is correct....
