"Harvester ants access another algorithm to solve a different critical problem. If the ant foragers gather too much food, they clog pathways and food storage chambers, as well as waste time and energy. If they forage too little, the ant colony starves. A balance is required, and an ant algorithm supplies it. Stored somewhere in the ant, this data-processing software governs their foraging frequency.

The algorithm relates at least three critical variables:

the rate of outgoing foragers,

the amount that the rate increases with each returning ant,

and the amount that the rate decreases with each outgoing ant.

"Harvester ant colonies are able to decide how many foragers they need to send out of the nest by using a protocol system that's eerily similar to the one IT professionals use to determine how much bandwidth is available on the internet. This so-called "anternet" apparently proves that ant decision-making and behavior is regulated by a sophisticated set of algorithms.

The research was conducted by Stanford ant biologist Deborah Gordon and computer scientist Balaji Prabhakar, whose findings were recently published in PLOS. Prabhakar was brought on board to see if he could find any correlations between ant behavior and computer science. After some preliminary observations he quickly realized that the ants were essentially using the same algorithm that describes TCP, the Transmission Control Protocol. TCP is used to discover how much bandwidth is available for transferring a file. But instead of bandwidth, the ants are using their own version of TCP to determine how much food is available based on the reports coming back from foraging ants.

It's worth noting that harvester ants do not use pheromone trails, and that they transmit information to each other using their antennae.

Fascinatingly, the team speculates that, had IT developers discovered this ant algorithm during the 1970s, they very well might have used it to develop TCP. Moreover, they believe the ants have more to offer, and strongly suspect they could still teach us about the design of network systems. The researchers contend that each ant may be very basic in terms of its capacities, but that the collective is capable of forming incredibly complex and sophisticated tasks."

"President Obama hailed the recent rulings on gay marriage issued from the U.S. Supreme Court, but one thing he promised, is that he wouldn’t turn the rulings against churches and force them to officiate over gay marriages. We can believe him, too. After all, Obama has always told the strict truth about everything… uh, right?

But is Obama’s federal hands off claim true. Probably not. Breitbart.com’s Ben Shapiro notes that the IRS could act to remove non-profit status for churches that refuse to hold gay marriages.
After all, if it is federal law that gays can’t be “discriminated” against in marriage ceremonies, then the IRS would almost have to take away the tax status from churches that refuse to officiate over gay marriages.
Shapiro says, The DOMA decision makes clear that marriage is a state-to-state issue, meaning that religious institutions that receive non-profit status on the federal level but do not perform or accept same-sex marriages in states where it is legal could have non-profit status revoked. Furthermore, should the IRS move to revoke federal non-profit status for churches, synagogues and mosques that do not perform same-sex marriage more generally, the Court could easily justify that decision on the basis of “eradicating discrimination” in religious education." "Scientists have discovered a burrow in South Africa where two unlikely creatures shared a home before being entombed by a flash flood 250 million years ago.
The strange bedfellows were a beat-up young amphibian seeking shelter and a sleeping cynodont... The burrow was unearthed from what is today South Africa's Karoo Basin, which would have been part of the ancient supercontinent Gondwana at the start of the Triassic Period.
As for the amphibian, the scans revealed it was a juvenile with several broken ribs that showed signs of healing, suggesting it had survived for some time after receiving a crippling injury. This animal was mostly aquatic and had no burrowing abilities of its own. Researchers think that in its handicapped state, the amphibian gingerly crawled into the burrow seeking protection without disturbing the dormant Thrinaxodon inside.
The researchers eliminated the possibility that the animals were in a predator-prey tussle at the time of death since there were no tooth-marks on the bones. The scientists also don't think it's likely that these two species would have cohabitated under normal circumstances." YahooNews

1) Who says it was 250,000,000 years ago? Based on what? Assumption & speculation isn't SCIENCE.

"Volunteers supported by Global Mission have established Aratika as a new territory for the Seventh-day Adventist Church in the French Polynesia Mission.
Evangelistic work on this island of some 200 inhabitants began three years ago when a small group of church members from Tahiti stayed for three months, sharing their faith. As a result of those evangelistic efforts, seven people were recently baptized.  
Pastor Marama Tuariihionoa, president of the French Polynesia Mission, accompanied by 20 volunteers from Tahiti (the main island where the capital is situated), helped build a new church with the capacity of 100 seats in 18 days. Through the generous support of Global Mission, the church was able to purchase land in Paparara for the construction of the new building.
With five archipelagoes, French Polynesia consists of 118 islands, 67 of which are inhabited."

remain divided—if Catholics have their schools and buildings and Protestants have theirs, if we can’t see ourselves in one another and fear or resentment are allowed to harden—that too encourages division and discourages cooperation.” On Thursday, the American Catholics for Religious Freedom fired back on President Obama’s words to 2,000 young people at the G8 Summit, stating, “President Obama’s anti-faith, secular agenda was shamefully on full display yesterday when he told the young people of Northern Ireland that Catholic education and other faith-based schools were divisive and an obstacle to peace.  All Americans of faith should be outraged by these comments which clearly telegraph the President’s belief system and are in fact at their core even anti-American.”
And, they note, this is the same President who has attempted to cram down anti-Catholic doctrine via Obamacare. “It’s time Americans stood up for Religious Freedom, for the U.S. Constitution and against President Obama’s radical views about the place of faith in American life,” the group concludes." Israeli tour guide Binyamin Tropper, who thought he was the first to discover the major historical artifact, was astonished to find out that authorities had known about the pillar for decades -- and had been keeping it a secret all that time.

"When I realized the significance of the pillar, I told my boss who spoke with the Israeli Antiquities Authority (IAA)," Tropper, who works at the educational field school at Kibbutz Kfar Etzion, told FoxNews.com. "The IAA then told him, 'that's great, now shut up.'"


But due to the complexities of Arab-Israeli relations, the find is being ignored, experts say, hushed up to avoid a major political battle over centuries of debate concerning who has the more legitimate claim to the Holy Land.

Tropper explained that in the last 20-30 years, an internal debate in Israel has ensued over the size and importance of King David's kingdom as described in the Bible. This pillar's design, he says, is consistent with the time period of the First Temple and would help provide concrete evidence of the Judean king's existence in Israel.

Evolution-based speculations about the timing of planet formation conflict with speculations about when the red dwarf star formed. The red dwarf is supposedly "only 8 million years old, making it an unlikely star to host a planet, according to this theory. There has not been enough time for a planet to grow through the slow accumulation of smaller debris."¹ When accounting for its great distance from its star—and that star's tiny size—the possible planet would supposedly have needed two billion years to form!
In addition, evolutionary models require pebble-sized debris to seed a protoplanet, but the observed gap lies in an area of the disk populated by tiny dust-sized grains.
