"Prediction: the first living cell must have been quite simple (it must

be to get started by purely natural processes). 

Researchers expected that a cell could be found that worked on ‘only’ about 20 genes (which would still be an impossible hurdle for its origin by natural means). 

However, the proposed LUCA (last universal common ancestor) is getting increasingly complex. The minimal viable cell now has over 400 genes/proteins! 

The prediction was stupendously wrong."
