Amos Analysis 7:1

Walk through Amos, verse by verse, with the great Bible Commentaries of Matthew Henry (1662 - 1714) & Adam Clarke (1760 - 1832)
7:1

Thus hath the Lord GOD shewed unto me; and, behold, he formed grasshoppers in the beginning of the shooting up of the latter growth; and, lo, it was the latter growth after the king's mowings. KJV

{The Lord God showed these things to me; and lo! a maker of locust(s) in the beginning of
burgeoning things of eventide rain, and lo! eventide rain after the clipper of the king.}
Wycliffe's Bible

Behold, he formed grasshoppers - גבי gobai is generally understood here to signify locusts.

The shooting up of the latter growth - The early crop of grass had been already mowed and housed. The second crop or rowing, as it is called in some places, was not yet begun. By the king's mowings we may understand the first crop, a portion of which the king probably claimed as being the better hay; but the words may signify simply the prime crop, that which is the best of the whole.
