CHRISTENDOM Series: Unitarian

UNITARIAN
(Other)

He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. John 10:1

The Unitarians joined in 1961 with what was left of the Universalist Church to form the Unitarian-Universalist denomination. (The Universalists believed everyone universally will be saved). Unitarians were a movement that rejected the Trinity & held a Unitarian view--that God is one, and that Christ was a "Son" of God in the same way humans can be viewed as such. Some claim Christ never existed until His human birth.
They tended to attract upscale people and in colonial times became a popular spiritual movement at
places like Harvard. In modern times, many Unitarians will admit they are not even Christians anymore (But some do hold to the Christian label).
They mix the Christian Bible with non-Christian writings to search for "truth". For example, they might use the writings of Hindu's, neo-pagans, Buddhists, etc. It was during the transcendental awaking of the 1830's &40's that this pluralism
began to creep into Unitarian congregations. Especially the philosophers who began to question the historicity of the Scriptures and use German liberal theology of the times.
Today it is a very theologically liberal church. About 160,000 members.
