"And since it is by His Spirit that this union is effected, it is evident

that baptism is something more than a mere form, and that only those are members of the true church of Christ who have the Spirit of Christ. Romans 8:9 But you are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of His. 

This must not by any means be understood as depreciating literal baptism or union with the visible church. 

We only wish to emphasize the fact that the simple form is not all."
