Unconsciously working against our prayers

"We are exhorted to “abstain from fleshly lusts, that war against the soul,” and in order to do this we are told to “make no provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.” Rom. 13:14.
Many sincere souls, earnestly longing and praying for deliverance
from sins inherent in the flesh, are unconsciously working against their prayers, and providing for the fulfiling of those lusts, by their habits of life.

The man who drinks intoxicating liquor cannot help becoming intoxicated. We know that God can rescue the drunkard from his bondage, but He cannot keep him from becoming intoxicated if he drinks. So God saves us from fleshly lusts, by instructing us concerning the things that beget those lusts, and saving us from them."
