--Intellectual integrity was sacrificed on the altar of ideological commitment. 

--Natural selection was thrust forward aggressively like a form of profane crucifix to ward off the danger thought to be posed by religion.... 

--Darwinism was beginning to assume for some the function of an anti-religious apotopaic or magic charm against supposed evil."
