Bookends of Psalm 118

"Psalm 118 has bookends.
The beginning and the ending are the same: “Oh, give thanks. Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. For his steadfast love endures forever” (118:1, 29).

When the Biblical authors use this literary device, they not only emphasize the beginning and the end, sometimes they also point to the middle.

The psalmist expresses absolute despair in the middle of this Psalm. The psalmist likens the enemies surrounding him to a swarm of bees (118:11). Then the psalmist says, “I was pushed hard so that I was falling” (118:13a)."
