7:14

Then answered Amos, and said to Amaziah, I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet's son; but I was an herdman, and a gatherer of sycomore fruit: KJV

(And Amos answered, and said to Amaziah, I am not a prophet, and I am not [the] son of a prophet;
but an herder of neat I am, drawing up sycamores.) Wycliffe's Bible

 He was a plain country-man, bred up and employed in country work and used to country fare. He followed the flocks as well as the herds, and thence God took him, and bade him go and prophesy to his people Israel, deliver to them such messages as he should from time to time receive from the Lord. God made him a prophet, and a prophet to them, appointed him his work and appointed him his post.
